MSG (Ret.) Nokomis Croney, Jr., 82 of Midland, Georgia passed away on February 1, 2023. He was born October 4,1940 to the late Nokomis Croney, Sr. and Bobbie Brim Croney in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. After graduating from Attucks High School in 1958 he faithfully served his country in the United States Army for 22 years. He served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne Division. During his services he received the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/6 Campaign Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Bronze Star Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster), Purple Heart Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (5th Award), Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Staff Service Honor Medal (2nd Class), and Overseas Service Bars (3 award). He also completed all levels of his military education which includes the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. MSG Croney also earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and the Vietnam Ranger Badge. After his retirement from the Army, he was the proprietor of his construction company, Croney’s Construction.
He served faithfully at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church as an ordained Deacon. He was a member of the Usher Board for 36 years, Usher Union, and Sunday School Teacher.
He was an active member of the Triple Nickel and Purple Heart organizations where he served as Chaplain for both, and the 173rd Airborne Brigade Association.
He leaves to cherish loving memories are his wife, JoAnn Thomas Croney of 17 years of Midland, Georgia; mother Bobbie Brim Croney of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; two sons, Gregory Croney and Nokomis Croney III both reside in Columbus, Georgia; three daughters, Debra C. Gibson and Sabrina C. Jordan both of Columbus, Georgia, and Sandra C. Mitchell (Samuel Mitchell) of Lawrenceville, Georgia; two step children Ashley Gordon of San Antonio, Texas and Stephanie Green (Travis Green) of Tallahassee, Florida. His siblings are Sammie Croney Sr., Marjorie C. Cotton (Phillip Cotton), Minnie C. Meriwether (Thomas Meriwether), Hopkinsville, Kentucky all residing in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and Bobbie Oxendine-Hutchins (Thomas Hutchins) of Clarksville, Tennessee; five grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation for family and friends for Nokomis will be held Friday, February 10, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907. A funeral services will occur Monday, February 13, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 201 S. Seale Rd, Phenix City, AL 36869.
Nokomis will be laid to rest in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, AL.
