Patricia Mauney Ward was born in Shelby, North Carolina, on October 3, 1922, and died in Columbus, Georgia, on July 16, 2022, at the age of 99. She was preceded in death by her parents Ada Ferree and Hugh Lee Mauney and grandparents Sara and Henry Ferree and Essie and John Thomas Stonewall Mauney. Patricia moved to Asheville, North Carolina, at an early age. She was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School in Asheville and went on to graduate from Brenau University, Gainesville, Georgia, in 1943 where she majored in English, music, and education. Patricia served as a member and President of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She was also recognized as May Queen while at Brenau.
She taught school in Toccoa, Athens, and Augusta, Georgia, before moving to Columbus in 1952. She was a long-time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, former member of the Junior League of Columbus, Columbus Country Club, and Magnolia Garden Club. Additionally, she was former Volunteer Director at the Bradley Center and served on the Board of Trustees at Brenau University. She will be remembered for her gracious manner, sense of humor, and love of butterflies.
She is survived by her three children: James William Ward, Jr. (Lyn), Mary Pat Ward King (Buford), Elizabeth Mauney Ward Reames (Ronnie); seven grandchildren: Tricia Ward Cowart (Stroud); James William Ward, III; Elizabeth King Rother (Chad), Rebecca King Sale (Josh), E. Buford King, IV (Sheri), Sujette Reames Lunsford (Cliff), and Sally Bohannon (Chad); and was loved by her great-grandchildren: Stroud Cowart, Winston Cowart, McClain Ward, Park Ward, Lulie King, Beau King, James Sale, Mary Hollis Sale, Miah Lunsford, Alex Lunsford, Joshua Lunsford, and Baker Bohannon.
A private burial will be held at Parkhill Cemetery on Friday, July 22, 2022. Following, the family will hold a visitation at 1:00 pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church with a memorial service following at 2:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed at http://live.spumcolumbus.com.
