

Robert Halman “Honk” Bennett, Sr. 80, of Columbus died Thursday, April 1, 2010 at the Wellness Cobb Hospital in Austell, Ga. A celebration of his life will be held Monday, April 5, 2010, 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA. 31907 with Dr. Hal Brady and Reverend Emory Gilbert officiating. Entombment to follow in Parkhill Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be, Matthew Streetman, Will deBrabant, Paul Newsome, Earl Marchbanks, Al Harrison, and Rob Streetman. Mr. Bennett was born November 24, 1929 in Albany GA to the late William Fred Bennett and Katie Bell Halman Bennett. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1949. He was employed by Southern Bell until he was drafted in 1951. After serving two years in the Panama Canal he returned to work with Southern Bell finishing his career 38 years later as a Central Office Foreman for the Columbus District. Mr. Bennett was a member of the St. Luke United Methodist Church for over 60 years where he served on the Administrative Board for several years and served as past President of the Fellowship Class. He enjoyed being a volunteer at the food pantry of St. Luke. His favorite pastime was hunting with friends in the Ole’ Timers Hunting Club which include James Nix, Steve Bolin, Steven Mainor, Mike Colquitt, Harvey Brown and Cliff McClendon. Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by a brother William Fred Bennett, Jr. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years; Elizabeth Regena Marchbanks Bennett children; Melissa Elaine Bennett deBrabant and husband Randy Elizabeth “Beth” Eileen Bennett Streetman and husband Rob Streetman Jr., Robert “Hal” Halman Bennett, Jr. and wife Lynn Mitchell Bennett; grandchildren, William Clayton deBrabant, Sarah Elizabeth Streetman, Robert Matthew Streetman, Ruthie Griffin Bennett, Lindsey Halman Bennett, Halley Elaine Bennett; niece, Allison Josephine Bennett. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions donations be made to the Valley Rescue Mission, 2903 2nd Ave, Columbus, GA 31904 or St. Luke United Methodist Church, Food Pantry, 1104 2nd Ave., Columbus, GA 31901.
