Dr. Samuel Ted Rice (lovingly called Sam), age 82, left us for his heavenly home early Monday morning with family by his side, while peacefully listening to “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. Sam loved and was loved by many friends and family alike and is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Sheryl; daughter Samantha (Sammi); son Ronald (wife Judy), grandson Logan and nieces Barbera Winder and Lee Ann Danzinger.
Sam was born and raised in Wewoka, Oklahoma and received his medical degrees from the University of Oklahoma. Sam completed his Assistant Residency of Urology at the Medical College of Virginia and his Residency in Urology & Surgery at the University of Minnesota.
Sam had several passions, forth most being his beloved and cherished patients. Sam loved practicing medicine and learning everything new on the horizon to better care for and serve his patient family. Sam retired in June of 2020 after serving the greater Columbus community for more than 49 years. Sam had a tremendous respect for our military and was a first Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. When not caring for people, Sam loved rooting for his Oklahoma Sooners in every football game. Sam’s other pastime was golf when he wasn’t loving on his family.
Sam’s family meant more to him than anything in the world. He was Sammi’s biggest and most boisterous cheerleader, attending every match and tournament. Sam and Sheryl’s love for each other was felt as much as it was witnessed. They were each other’s rock, morning sunrise, horizon, and beautiful sunset. God’s will connected Sam and Sheryl.
Sam and his family celebrated their Christian faith in numerous churches in Columbus, GA. Where he greeted everyone with a smile and a positive comment while he loved, and he served with a joyful heart. Rest in peace our beloved, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
A Celebration of Life for Sam will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Grace Presbyterian Church. Reverend Mike Stewart will be officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to John B. Amos Cancer Center or Columbus Hospice.
