at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Stuart Mitchell.
Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 6, 2015 from 11:00 to noon followed by a service in the Mill Room
of Striffler Hamby on Macon Road in Columbus, GA. with Stuart Mitchell and The Reverend
Jeff Jackson, Rector, St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, Hamilton, GA. officiating. She will be buried at the
Fort Benning Main Post Cemetery.
She was born in Hartwell, GA on February 6,1925 to Clarence and Olive Heaton. She was
the eldest of five children and her siblings preceded her in death; a sister, Carolyn O'Barr
and three brothers. John, Sterling Gustavus and Clarence Matthew Heaton who is an MIA
from the Korean conflict.
After graduating high school, she went to work for L&N Railroad in Montgomery, AL
where she met her husband and father of her children, George A. Crowell. He was an
Army career officer and pilot. Together they lived all over the world with assignments in
Japan, Germany and France. Their four children were born in different states and
countries. They settled in Columbus, GA and lived there for many years. After the death
of our father in 1994, She later married James R. Woods from Pine Mountain, GA and
moved there.
Our mother excelled at adapting to any situation with a strong will, a cheeky sense of
humor and a love for people. She was a good business woman, held a real estate license,
managed the physician office practice of Drs. Blake and Hoffman in Phenix City, AL for
more than twenty years and managed the family farm in Wetumpka, AL.
After retiring, marrying James R. Woods and moving to Pine Mountain, she was active in
community, civic and professional organizations. She was a member of the Chipley
Women’s Club of Pine Mountain, the CWC Bridge Club, was an ambassador for the Harris
County Chamber of Commerce, a member of The Harris County Cattleman’s Association,
Focus and a volunteer at Callaway Gardens. She loved all animals except snakes. She
was a lifelong Episcopalian and had affiliations with Trinity Episcopal Church, Columbus, GA.,
St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, GA and Holy Trinity in Melbourne, FL.
She was generous with her time, love and laughter and always made others laugh with
her witty remarks. She enjoyed good conversation, a toddy for the body and shared what
ever she had. She was the eternal optimist and when asked if she was having a good day
always responded "Every day is a good day, some are just better than others".
Her graciousness, Southern charm, and her unabashed inclination to call people from the
North "Yankees" will be greatly missed. She loved pine trees, rolling hills, gardening and
all things Southern.
Survivors include her children Frank (Vicki) Crowell of Juliette, GA,
Bob Crowell of Auburn, AL. Linda Zeitouni of Columbus, GA and Lisa (Stuart) Mitchell
of Satellite Beach, FL. Grandchildren are Lauren (Jeremy) Bollinger of Newnan, GA.
Ellen (Phillip) Sheffield of Jacksonville, FL. Bobby Crowell of Auburn, AL and Chase Crowell of
Auburn, AL and Danielle Tarpley of Macon, GA.
Pallbearers are Bobby Crowell, Chase Crowell, Jeremy Bollinger, Phillip Sheffield,
Dwaine O'Barr and Mike Crowell.
