

Susan Harmon, age 69, resident of Columbus, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Columbus Hospice House. Funeral Mass is scheduled at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2000 Kay Circle, Columbus on Saturday, September 29, 2012, 11 a.m. with Father Gerard Schreck officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, September 28, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. Mrs. Harmon, daughter of the late James Gerard Koch and Helen Ethlyn Werner Koch, was born October 7, 1942 in St. Louis, MO. She was raised in Memphis, TN and attended Immaculate Conception High School where she was class valedictorian, choir organist, and editor of the school newspaper. After graduation from high school, she attended and graduated from Memphis State University where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and Phi Beta Kappa. After college, she began a teaching career and taught in Tennessee and North Carolina. Mrs. Harmon then moved to Columbus in 1973 and taught at Pacelli High School and Shaw High School as a Spanish and ESOL teacher. She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and devoted herself to the church as a choir member, school board member, CCW, and Altar Society. Mrs. Harmon was a Master Gardener, volunteered many hours at St. Francis Hospital, and an avid bridge player. She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Geeslin and her husband James of Columbus; two sons, Kevin Harmon and his wife Sarah of Atlanta, GA and David Harmon and his wife Magdalena of Cincinnati, OH; one brother, Carl Koch and his wife Joyce of LaCrosse, WI; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Sam, Sarah Grace, Andrea, Jennifer, David, and Daniel; other relatives and friends. The family would like to extend an appreciation to the staff of John B. Amos Cancer Center, Columbus Hospice House, and Dr. Peter Jiang. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Anne Catholic Church, Attn: Outreach Center, 2000 Kay Circle, Columbus, GA 31907.
