

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 29, 2012 in Striffler – Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel with a private interment in Parkhill Cemetery. Dr. James C. Elder, Jr. will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 A.M. until 11 A.M.at the funeral home.
Mr. Murphy was born April 17, 1920 in Oglethorpe, GA the son of the late Ralph Waldo Emerson Murphy, Sr., and the late Eunice Mae English Murphy. He had lived in Columbus most of his life and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Murphy was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus, a graduate from the School of the Blind, and played football for the University of Georgia. He retired as an engineer with Norfolk Southern Railroad after forty three years of service.
Survivors include his children, Kathy M. Herndon and her husband, Michael, and Melanie M. Tedders Gunn and her husband, Mike all of Columbus; two brothers, Ralph Murphy and Bobby Murphy; three grandchildren, Greg Herndon, Karen H. Eldridge and Amber Brooke Tedders; eight great-grandchildren.
