
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 9, 2011 at St. Luke United Methodist Church with Dr. Hal Brady, Reverend Helen Berenthien and Reverend John Adams officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA. Interment will be held Monday, January 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. CST, at Philadelphia Baptist Church cemetery in Peterman, Alabama.
Dr. Chappell was born in Repton, AL, on September 8, 1948, to Margaret Nettles Chappell of Peterman, AL, and the late William L. Chappell. He earned his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Alabama and served as a professor at Columbus State University for 34 years. Dr. Chappell was known for his love of history and storytelling. He also served his country in Vietnam as a Signal Officer for the 720th MP Battalion.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Delane Dees Chappell of Columbus, GA; two children - Jennifer Camille Chappell of Columbus and William Samuel Chappell of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; three grandchildren - Ryan Dixon, Samuel Dixon and Jamie Chappell, all of Columbus; two sisters - Vivian Chappell Tuberville (Willard) and Dora Chappell Ramer (Gene), both of Peterman; mother-in-law, Frances Stuckey of Columbus; sister-in-law, Kathy Dees of Orlando, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and/or the National Kidney Foundation.
