William attended school at St. Norbert College where he obtained a BS in Economics in 1958. He joined The United States Army and attended aviation courses in 1961 followed by Ranger School in 1965, Command and General Staff in 1970 and Air War College in 1978. He served our country from October 12, 1958, to November 1, 1984, he retired as a Colonel. A follower of Christ, he was a member of St. John Evangelist Church in Green Bay, Wisconsin in the late ‘50s and attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Columbus, Georgia.
According to his Army values, he always lived his life with loyalty, duty, respect, honor, and integrity. He loved his family dearly and would always play pranks on them. He was a loyal, patient, hardworking man who dedicated his life as a soldier, a husband, and a father.
William is preceded in death by his wife, Clareen Shackelford; his son, Robert Shackelford; and his parents, Roy G. and Marion Shackelford. He survives by his children, Steven Shackelford, Jolyce Lumpkin, and Elizabeth Baker, and his grandchildren, Lindley Stone and Lorin Baker.
