

Mr. Pettit was born May 23, 1934 at his home in Switzerland County, IN. the son of the late Harry Clifford and Ruth Aldine Gunnion Pettit.
He married the love of his life, Almira Faye Green October 04, 1959 at Tea Creek Baptist Church in Jennings County, IN.
John was a 1952 graduate of Vernon High School.
He was a former truck driver for REA Express and retired from Bartholomew County Offices in 1996 where he was a custodian in the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation, the Bartholomew County Jail, Courthouse and Government Building.
Mr. Pettit was an active member of Memorial Baptist Church in Columbus, IN. where he was a former Deacon, member of the Choir and Adult Sunday School Class as well as many other committees within the church. He enjoyed fellowship and Bible Studies with other church members and loved singing gospel hymns with his brothers and sister.
Mr. Pettit was an avid fan of IU Basketball, Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis Colts, Indianapolis 500 and Tony Stewart.
Most of all, John enjoyed spending quality time with his family. He loved watching and supporting his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren during their activities and sporting events. He was their biggest fan.
The funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Pettit will be conducted at 10:30 am Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Memorial Baptist Church at 2320-7th St., Columbus, IN. 47201 with Pastor Brian K. Teater and Pastor Scott Murphy officiating. A eulogy will be given by John’s son, Terril and special music will be sung by his granddaughters, Denise, Crystal, Lyndsey, Aeriel and Reagan.
Calling hours will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Monday at the church and from 9:30 am until the time of the service on Tuesday.
Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery in Vernon, IN. Pallbearers will be John’s son, Terril and his grandson’s Trevor, Nick, Christopher, Caleb, Taylor, Matthew and Joshua.
Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Baptist Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Along with his wife of 56 years, John is also survived by three daughters, Tina Denise Long, Tamara Rose “Tammy” (Bob) Hollen and Tonia Almira (Barry) Medaris and a son, Terril Ivan “Terry” (Fiancé, Kelly Sage) Pettit all of Columbus, IN.; a sister, Marilyn Estell of Columbus, IN.; three brothers, Ralph, Robert (Mary) and Dale (Cecelia) Pettit all of North Vernon, IN.; twelve grandchildren, Denise (Tim) Sharpe, Crystal (Travis) Miller, Lyndsey (Ryan) Thoman, Christopher (Hannah) Zeigler, Aeriel Rose and Caleb John Pettit, Reagan Medaris and Taylor and Matthew (Mechelle) Hollen all of Columbus, IN. and Trevor (Heather) Burton of West Lafayette, IN., Nick (Sara) Burton of Chesterfield, MO. and Joshua Hollen of Terre Haute, IN.; fifteen great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
