Mary Ruth graduated valedictorian from Union Star High School in Missouri. She graduated from Park College, majoring in music, near Kansas City, Missouri. Years later she earned her master’s degree in music from Butler University. She started her career as organist and choir director, and met her future husband at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Missouri. She taught music in several schools, including Union Star, Missouri, King City, Missouri, Springfield, Missouri, and Carmel, Indiana.
Mary Ruth spent her retirement teaching music at Pine Tree Camp in Boca Raton, Florida and leading the bell choir at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church in Carmel, Indiana, where she was a member. She enjoyed volunteering in her church, and gave piano lessons to as many as 56 students in Carmel. Her students loved her dearly, and it was a sad day when she told them she was quitting and moving to Columbus, Indiana, to be closer to her daughter.
Mary Ruth loved to travel and was blessed to see many foreign countries and much of the United States. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. She played the piano for church at Silver Oaks for many years. She also enjoyed Bingo, Quiz games, Spiffy Nails, and all the great entertainment they had at Silver Oaks. Her favorite time was walking outside to appreciate God’s beautiful handiwork.
Mary Ruth’s biggest priority was her family. She and her husband hosted many fun family get togethers in Carmel, Indiana, as well as Phoenix, Arizona and Boca Raton, Florida. Grandchildren will remember many visits with Grammy and Grandpa where the refrigerator was always stocked with their favorite drinks and food. In Florida, after a fun day of camp, all the grandchildren loved to swim in the pool before supper. Grammy, wanting to be sure everyone got their vegetables for the day, would stand by the pool and throw carrot sticks for the grandkids to catch in their mouths. Both grandparents were always very fun to be around. We will never forget the wonderful family times and how life at our parents’ house was a constant celebration.
Though Mary Ruth will be sadly missed by friends and family, we take solace in knowing she is “dancing in the streets of gold” with our Father. She is in a happier, more joyful place than we can begin to comprehend.
