Sam was born in Decatur, Illinois, on July 5, 1991. Sam lived his early childhood years in Decatur and also, for a short time, in Tacoma, Washington. Sam moved to Columbus with his family in 2000. He attended Lillian Schmitt Elementary School, Northside Middle School and Columbus North High School from which he graduated in 2009.
Sam was warm, fun loving and adored his family and friends. He was a naturally talented artist, a fine athlete and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Sam is survived by his parents, Pete and Mary Winick of Columbus; brothers, Alex and Charlie of Columbus; long‐time girlfriend, Sara Van De Putte of Columbus; grandparents, John and Joan Winick of Decatur, Illinois, and Dennis and Ann Risdon of Olympia, Washington; and his loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sam was a special guy and left us far too early. Our love for him will last forever.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the PAAL Football fields south of Columbus.
His family wishes to thank all of Sam's wonderful friends for the love they have shared at this difficult time and express their gratitude to Bartholomew County Coroner Larry Fisher and to all the dedicated and courageous first responders who serve the community. Heartfelt thanks.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Columbus PAAL football in Sam’s memory.
Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.hathaway‐myers.com.
