

Thomas G. Spofford, 75, of Columbus died Saturday, October 9, 2010 of congestive heart failure. Born September 29, 1935 in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was a 1957 Engineering graduate of what is now Case Western Reserve University. Mr. Spofford began employment with Arvin Industries in 1969. He also held several U.S. Letters of Patent from previous employment. He retired from Arvin Meritor in 2003.
As a member of Indiana Society of Professional Engineers, he coordinated the JETS-TEAMS high school competition at IUPUC for many years. Mr. Spofford was a registered PE in New Jersey. He was an avid bicyclist, runner, and triathlete.
Mr. Spofford was the son of Franklin D. and Jean Dimmick Spofford. He is survived by his wife, Diane; son Scott A. (Emma Stanbro) Spofford of Fairplay, CO; daughter Donna (Doug) VanKlompenburg of Columbus; stepson Matt (Brandy) Scott of McKinney, TX; stepdaughter Marlo Scott of New York, NY; mother of his children Jane Pettitt; and five grandchildren: Kyle and Ryan VanKlompenburg, Jessica and Raeanne Stanbro, and Holden Scott.
A service of memory and celebration will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus Indiana, 7850 Goeller Blvd, Columbus. The Reverend Dennis McCarty will officiate. There will be refreshments after the service for all attending.
There will be calling hours at the UUC Church on Saturday, October 16 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The family requests that no flowers be sent. Memorial contributions can be made to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus or The Heritage Fund of Columbus.
