William E. Burd, 78, of Columbus, passed Sunday, November 4th, 2018 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Mr. Burd was a devoted family man and followed in the footsteps of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He was a dedicated member of First Christian Church and a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Indiana, to which he recently received his 50 year Award of Gold. In addition to his community, Bill proudly served his country as a First Lieutenant in the US Army in the Vietnam War. During his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze star for his sacrifice and bravery. Through this all, his passion was architecture. Bill had been an award winning architect for more than 50 years, 25 of which at his own firm. He won national awards for his authentic and contemporary designs that continue to help define Columbus as a renowned architectural city. Bill’s creative legacy can be seen on many designs in our community, however some of his most notable accomplishments include Fire Station #3 (National AIA Award), Fire Station #2 and the auditorium and natatorium expansions at Columbus North High School. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Anna Lois Burd. Remembering Bill with love and admiration includes his wife of 45 years, Loretta M. Burd; children Deborah Burd of Hilton Head, Teri Dorazil of Dallas and Stephen and Mechelle Burd of Hilton Head; sisters Mary Ann Sodrel and Donna Schad of New Albany; and grandchildren Haley, Preston, Gia, Roman, Sterling, Steele, Slaide and Stone. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, November 9th at First Christian Church (531 5th Street, Columbus, IN) with Rev. Michael Hogg officiating. Friends will be received beginning at noon. Following the service, the family will hold a private entombment at Garland Brook Cemetery with military rites provided by the Bartholomew County Combined Honor Guard. Following the entombment ceremony, the Burd Family lovingly invites all family and friends to attend the “Bill Burd Life Celebration” reception at the Harrison Lake Country Club beginning at 4 pm. The Burd Family asks for memorials in Mr. Burd’s name to be donated to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana (Columbus, IN).
