

Alan Robert Rosenfield was born September 7, 1931, in Boston Massachusetts. A star student, he received full scholarship support for his undergraduate degree through his doctorate. He graduated from MIT with a ScD in metallurgy and became a leading scientist in his field. He spent his career at Battelle Memorial Labs in Columbus, Ohio. He was named a Fellow of the American Society of Metals. He published over 200 scholarly articles and co-authored 3 books. While he published his last article in 2010, he is still cited in 15-20 research papers a month today.
In his retirement, he pursued his passion for the environment including work on nuclear containment vessels, fracking, clean energy, and other environmental causes. An active mind to the very end, his hobbies included The Guardian crossword puzzle, genealogy, French language, and current events.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Walter (Teddy) Rosenfield and Gertrude Florence (Lavetts) Rosenfield. He died peacefully surrounded by wife Margaret Ann (Peg Young) Rosenfield, daughter Ann Baker Rosenfield, and son Joel William Rosenfield on February 28, 2022. He is also survived by Joel's wife Julie (Goldman) Olsen and stepdaughter Shelby (Olsen) Olson, and Ann's children Theodore (Atmos Fierce) Rosenfield and Margaret (Maggie) Rosenfield. Also missed by many friends including the weekly "Old Farts" lunch group from Battelle.
A graveside service for Al and Peg will be held at 10am Wednesday, March 16 at Union Cemetery, Section 22. There will be an outdoor reception immediately following the service. Arrangements entrusted to SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN.
