It was 1967 and for a family vacation we picked up Diane at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.  We then drove to Columbus for a visit before going on to St. Albans, WV.

Our favorite memory of Uncle Alfred is from our last reunion in 2008 when several of us got a chance to visit the original KFC there in Corbin Ky.   Uncle Alfred wasn't very hungry and said he only wanted to order one piece of chicken.  The rest of us got what we wanted and were seated enjoying our dinner when we realized he hadn't joined us yet.  We couldn't figure out what was taking so long since it was only 1 piece that he wanted.  In fact we were almost finished with our meal when here he came with a huge plate loaded down with food--much more than we had ordered!   He also had this look of unbelief on his face that said, "How am I ever going to eat all of this?"  Turns out they had run out of chicken so he had a long wait.  I guess they felt bad that he had to wait so long and that's why he ended up with an enormous meal.  We not only teased him then but we brought it up several other times and enjoyed a good laugh.

Although we live closer than most of the extended family, it seems our lives have always been running too fast to have time together.  I do regret that very much.  My favorite memory of Uncle Alfred is fairly recent. At the last Thornton Family Reunion (2008), my husband, Doug, and I had the chance to eat breakfast with Aunt Ina Lee and Uncle Alfred.  Doug and I have talked many times about that breakfast.  We cannot remember any part of our conversation that really stood out.  But we were struck by the easy, peaceful visit we had.  There were no expectations or agendas.  We all just enjoyed our time together.  I believe Uncle Alfred was simply taking each moment on its own.  He had learned to just "be" and enjoy life as it came.  I hope and pray that I can learn to just "be" in each moment, as modeled by this precious man of God who knew who he was and where he was going.

I am so sad to hear of Uncle Alfred's home-going as I know it will be a great void in your family without him.  He was always so kind to us kids growing up when you used to visit St. Albans.  I was most impressed with his love for the LORD and know that same LORD will be with you as you Grieve but not without Hope!!  We will meet him in the air any day now. To My Dear Dad, It is hard to believe that you are no longer here with us. It is so hard to imagine life without you. You have always been the best Dad anyone could ever want,(loving,kind,caring,sympathetic,funny,hard working,always there for me,and so many wonderful things).I will miss you so much,(already do), and will always hold you in my heart forever.The one thing that is good is that I know you are not suffering, or in pain anymore.
