Alfred Stephan, affectionately known as Al and Uncle Al to many, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on August 14, 1928 in Lodz, Poland to the late Alfred and Elfriede Stephan. At the end of WWII, he and his family settled in Straubing, Germany, where he met the love of his life, Trudy.
Trudy’s adventurous side brought her to the United States in 1950. Al followed her a year later, and they were married on February 16, 1952. Together they embarked on the American Dream. Al was enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in France during the Korean war. Upon his return to the U.S., he and Trudy moved to Columbus, OH, where they both worked for Westinghouse and raised their daughter Kristina.
Al’s kindness, positivity, loving heart, and wit will continue to inspire those who loved him, and his “Al-isms” will forever reverberate in the minds of those he loved. He would want them to think of him when they eat sauerkraut, plum cake, or ice cream on a stick, drink a beer, or sit outside and watch the squirrels and rabbits put on a show. He would want them to be happy that after 3 long years, he is finally reunited with Trudy. Most of all, he would want to be remembered with a smile.
Al will be deeply missed by his daughter, Tina Lundgren; son-in-law Terry Lundgren; grandchildren, Tracey Lundgren and Jessica Lundgren; great-grandson Griffin Matteoni; sister Mara Vogt; true friends, Trish and John Cadwallader and Kathy Gantz; “unofficial daughters” Karen Kasich and Christine Demos; Angels in his life, Gavin Cadwallader and “My Anna” Cadwallader; and the loving men and women who cared for him in his final years.
Papa…The future is here.
