Allen was an amazing person as can be seen by what John Keeling posted. I'll especially remember Al for his quick wit and his ability to use the most precise descriptive words when discussing various subjects. He was what I feel to have been "a man for all seasons."

I had the honor and privilege of working with Allen throughout most of his career at the public defender's office. We spent most of the time in adjacent offices. He was an extraordinarily talented attorney and had many significant appellate victories that established precedent used by the justice system for decades. His cases will continue to provide guidance for the legal system for years to come. Allen was one of the most respected attorneys in the history of the office.  Other lawyers from the office and the private sector would often seek his counsel and advice on issues they were struggling with.

As much as I admired him as a lawyer, I liked him even more as a person. Allen was very well read and loved to travel. He kept lists of all the books he read and, in many years, this list would number around 300 books. He kept journals of his travels and he knew the United States as well as most people know their home town. If you were going to any state, Allen could suggest some great restaurants and interesting spots to visit. 

He was an entertaining conversationalist and had quite a sense of humor. It was for these reasons that he was pretty much my constant lunch companion during our working years, a tradition that continued into retirement. It was obvious from our conversations that he loved his family and friends. His family was very special to him. Some of the folks at the office, when they had a break from work in the afternoon, would stop by to see Al because he could talk to just about anyone on almost any subject. He never cut any of the visits short even if it caused him to have to stay late to get his work done. 

Allen enjoyed professional wrestling and the opera. For awhile, he had a poster of Randy "Macho Man" Savage hanging in his office along with an eclectic collection of other items reflecting his varied interests. Allen also loved his cars and owned more high-end performance vehicles than any other public defender in the history of the office. This interest carried over into a love of racing. He and Cheryl would go to the movies more than any couple I knew. He gave very accurate reviews, better than any published movie critic I have ever encountered. He loved railroading. He has quite a collection of model trains of various scales. He even had a large scale train that ran through his back yard for a number of years. He built many models and collected thousands of books on railroading. 

Allen's varied interests helped make him the informative and entertaining man we all loved so much. He will leave an immense void in my life. I will miss him greatly as will we all. From one career public defender to another, congratulations to Al for a life well lived. We will never forget you!!

Although Allen came from the small town of Mansfield, he was very cosmopolitan in his tastes.  While a student at Brown University he developed a love of opera and attended the Metropolitan Opera in New York many times with a friend.  He and Cheryl, whom he had known since early childhood, traveled to England on their honeymoon. Their road trips around the country were sometimes two months long and often involved attending the opera in San Francisco and other major cities around the country.  Allen also had an appreciation of fine cars, especially European cars.  

I think what amazed me most about Allen was his creativity when it came to hobbies. His elaborate train set-up was complimented by the miniature buildings and houses he had created for it.  When that was completed he made and painted small-scale replicas of particular houses and buildings he had photographed on his many trips with Cheryl.  The minute details of each little creation showed how precise and delicate his hands were. Although Allen was a lawyer and wrote several volumes of law that are in use at his office now, at heart Allen was an artist and a fine one at that.

Dear Cheryl and family I send you my deepest sympathy and heartfelt remembrances of Allan.  Through several visits of he and Cheryl to her mom, Betty, I was able to meet him.  Certainly a light in each of your lives; of cherished times together; for a life well lived.  May the light of the things and people he loved and cared about shine on through you.
