Amos Ellis, Sr. was one of fifteen children born to the union of John Ellis, Jr. and Viola McGee-Ellis (both deceased) of Louin, Mississippi. Amos moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1951 to live with his Uncles Jack and Herbert. He moved to find work and escape a harsh life of field labor and to start to build a better life. He was a “mommy’s boy”. He loved to follow her around and learn from her. He met the love of his life Sarah Johnson in 1974 while working at Carl Brown grocery store. They wed January 31, 1975. He obeyed the gospel at Mount Vernon church of Christ in the 1960’s. Amos was a very simple, funny, humble, gentle, caring, and compassionate man. He was also a builder. Building and construction was in his blood. He enjoyed the earth, nature, and his family and took nothing for granted. He found joy in everything especially his beloved recliner.
His philosophies, when talking about life, were,
“Everything’s Going to be Alright”
“I Want What I Want”
“It’s Just One of Those Thangs”
“Come Day, Go Day”
Amos was a member of the Columbus Eagles Motorcycle Club, even though he never rode one and was always seen helping others while displaying a great sense of humor, especially with his “dad” jokes.
Amos is preceded in death by his mother and father, three of his seven brothers, Johnnie B. Ellis, Willie Lee Ellis, and Dennis Ellis, and two sisters Little Mary Ellis and Beatrice Ellis-Dinkins.
