Andrew Walter Prout III, beloved father and husband, died with loved ones by his side on Saturday, March 19 after a brief battle with sepsis and organ failure at Riverside Methodist Hospital. The son of Captain Andrew Prout, Jr. and Marylee Reedy Prout, Andrew was born in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from Columbus Academy in 1965, captaining the football team and also playing baseball, always wishing he could throw a curveball like his younger brother Steve. He graduated from Duke University in 1969 and spent two years in the Navy before attending Ohio State University, graduating with an MBA in 1973. He married Gloria Beth Olson in 1974 and had two sons; neither son can remember playing in a single sporting event without Dad in the stands.
Andrew worked as a Systems Analyst at Ohio State for 10 years and at Nationwide Insurance for 20 years, but he also carried a passion for literature and music that he passed on to his sons. Saturday mornings were often spent playing chess with his sons with folk music on the stereo. Andrew loved chess so much that he collected chess sets from around the world during and after his service in the Navy; he also painted ceramic chess pieces throughout his adult life. His family fondly remembers Ocean Isle beach trips with Duke and Nationwide friends; front yard football battles with neighbors and cousins; and attending Ohio State and Duke sporting events with Andrew. He loved his dogs just as his own parents loved theirs, as there was always a Labrador around to pamper with food under the table. Andrew was a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, a love that his sons unfortunately inherited.
Andrew was preceded in death by his father Andrew, Jr. and his mother Marylee Prout; he is survived by his wife Gloria Prout; his sons Andrew IV and Zachary (Jill) Prout; his brother Steve (Janet) Prout; and his grandchildren Lee and Zoe Prout. Friends may call at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Rd, Columbus, Friday, April 1, from 4-7 p.m. A memorial service will also be held at Schoedinger on Saturday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where Andrew's son Andrew IV received lifesaving care in 1977.
