

Barbara Walcott Denner of Columbus, Ohio passed away at age 91on March 9, 2016. She was born in Granite City, IL. Her family moved to Portsmouth in 1935 and then to Columbus in 1940. She graduated from West High School in 1942 and was in the National Honor Society. Barbara married Carl F. Denner on October 9, 1942. After raising two children, in 1964 at age 39 Barbara attended Ohio State University and graduated in 1967 with a teaching degree and later with a Masters Degree. She became a member of Phi Alpha Theta in 1967. Barbara had a very successful 25 year career with Gahanna-Jefferson School System teaching elementary and middle school. In 1977, she became Curriculum Coordinator and later became Director of Curriculum. She organized Latch Key Program at Gahanna-Jefferson in 1991. She gave many seminars and received many awards. Barbara was credited with playing a significant role in developing a strong English language arts program in the district; and she developed annual district writing assessments and district rubrics which continue to help students become successful writers. In 2007, Barbara became a Cornerstone Award Honoree of Gahanna-Jefferson Education Foundation. She was President of Ohio ASCD and OEA. She was also President of Franklin County School Employee Credit Union Board from 1976-1992 and on the board of Smart Credit Union until February 2015. Barbara loved traveling, tending her rose garden, crossword puzzles, reading, lunch with friends and family get-togethers. She was the beloved matriarch of her family and will be greatly missed. Barbara is survived by her husband Carl Denner, daughter Carol D. Young (Rob), son Herschel A. Denner (Penny), grandchildren Julie Wilson Tetzloff (David), Brad L. Wilson (Merideth), Holly and Katie Denner, great grandchildren Harper and Everett Tetzloff, Ben and Claire Wilson, nephew Bruce Walcott(Becky) and many nieces and nephews. Contributions in Barbara's honor suggested to American Cancer Society.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at Friendship Village of Columbus, Friendship Hall, 5800 Forest Hills Blvd., Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 2pm.
