Beloved wife of Frederick Joseph Golan, devoted mother of six, loving grandmother of twelve and proud great-grandmother of three. She was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, attended the University of Nebraska, and was introduced to society at the Aksarben Ball in Omaha. She raised her family in Upper Arlington before she and her husband spent their retirement years flying and golfing in Spruce Creek Fly In Community in Port Orange, Florida. After Fred, the love of her life, passed in 2007, Barbara’s curiosity inspired her to travel the world. Following a celebration of her 90th birthday with friends and family in Spruce Creek, Barbara returned to Ohio to be close to her children.
Barbara worked as a reporter in Lincoln before beginning a family of her own. She approached homemaking with the same grace and dedication with which she did everything. After raising her children, she realized her lifelong dream of learning to fly, becoming an accomplished pilot and flight instructor at the Ohio State University. Determined to give back, she was always an active volunteer in all the communities in which she lived including (but certainly not limited to) Kappa Kappa Gamma, Junior League, and the TWIG. She was an inspiration, a role model, and a master of time management. She was an intelligent understated woman who touted the undeniable importance of fun. Her kindness, wit, and generosity were a gift to all those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her six children: Frederick (Anne), Stephanie (Alan), Leslie, Mary Sue (Jeff), Virginia and Robert (Vickie); grandchildren: Patrick, Claire, Caroline, Katherine, Catherine, Michael, Michael, Wendy, Ronald, Pamela, Adam, Daniel, and Katie; and great grandchildren: Brendan, Mary, and Anthony.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please leave your condolences, memories, and kindness with Barbara's family below.
