

Bernard Olen Baker, age 93, died Thursday, February 2, 2012 at home surrounded by family. Bernie was born in Long Bottom, Ohio, son of the late Monte and Addie Swank Baker. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Dale and Lloyd Baker. Bernie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilynn; daughter, Michelle; grandchildren, Connor and Alaina; brother, Clair (Pat); in-laws Ronald and Peg McCauley and Nellie Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bernie was a Veteran of WWII, US Army Air Corp where he served as an aircraft mechanic working behind the lines across Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University where he earned a BS in Agriculture, performed graduate work in Agronomy, and was a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honorary. Bernie retired from Beechwold Post Office where his customers affectionately called him “Postmaster General of Beechwold”. He was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church where he was an usher, member of the Friendship Group and Dartball Team. Bernie was a lifetime member of the Worthington VFW Post #2398, and was an active volunteer at Riverside Methodist Hospital, The Park of Roses and Gille Senior Center. He was an avid reader, gardener, OSU Buckeye fan, and loved nothing more than spending time with his family. Family will receive friends from 2-6 P.M. Sunday, February 5, 2012 at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High St. Services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Monday, February 6, 2012 at Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 7 W. Henderson Rd. Officiated by daughter, Rev. Michelle Baker and brother-in-law, Rev. Ronald McCauley. Private family entombment.
