With profound sadness we announce the passing of the spirit and matriarch of our family Maxine Bates of Dublin, Ohio at the age of 94. She is preceded in death by her parents Earl and Mabel Campbell and her husband, Jack A. Bates. Maxine is survived by her daughter Deborah Swanner of Powell, OH and son Steve Thompson (Sarabeth) of San Diego, CA and her stepchildren Wes Bates (Ann) of Dublin, OH, Danny Bates of Bellefontaine, OH, and Amy Muccio (Fred) of Columbus, OH; 27 incredible grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as several special nieces, nephews and extended family members. Maxine was born on January 24, 1927 on a farm in Triadelphia, Ohio and moved to Columbus after graduating high school. Her first job was with the Ohio State Parole Board as a stenographer followed by General Clay Products Company where she worked welcoming customers each day with a smile, passion, and tenacious dedication for 20 years. In 1972 Maxine married the love of her life, Jack A. Bates, the founder of Stanley Steemer Carpet Cleaner. She even cashed out her retirement program to put towards building the foundation of Stanley Steemer and never looked back. With the company in its infancy, Maxine dedicated herself to being the gracious hostess entertaining prospective franchise owners, handling the payroll, answering the phone, and then packing up and moving to California to help develop the west coast. Although she lived in California and traveled the world, Ohio was always home, and she returned to Dublin after 15 years. No job was beneath her. She did it all from booking jobs to washing the crews' uniforms and cleaning the bathrooms. Maxine became the 'face and spirit' of Stanley Steemer where the company created the "Maxine Bates Award" to recognize and celebrate women who showed their dedication and passion in the franchise system. With her iron-clad memory once Maxine made a friend it was for life never forgetting your birthday, anniversary, the names of all your kids and what you were wearing the day you met. More than likely she would cut your favorite coupons or a funny cartoon and mail to you. She cherished her friendships from early years on her bowling team at Fiesta Lanes and her wonderful neighbors in Muirfield to her weekly dinners on Tuesday nights at Iacono's Pizza in Shawnee Hills. Maxine was in the know reading a couple of newspapers a day, completing several crossword puzzles in ink and listened to all news stations. She was an avid and loyal baseball fan particularly to her San Diego Padres and followed baseball throughout the season subscribing to the satellite baseball stations so she never missed a game. As a wife she was a great listener and cheerleader; as a mother she taught discipline, good work ethic and kindness. And as a grand and great-grandmother she spoiled them all sharing her funny stories and jokes commanding laughter throughout the room. She will be forever missed and never forgotten. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8pm on Wednesday, February 24 at Schoedinger Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Dr. where a private funeral service will be at noon on Thursday, February 25. GUESTS ARE RESPECTFULLY ASKED TO WEAR MASKS AT ALL TIMES AND PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING. For those unable to attend the funeral, a livestream can be viewed beginning at noon at: https://webcasts.lifetributes.com/1121400. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude's Hospital and The Salvation Army.
