

Carol M. Watkins, age 86, of Columbus and North Ft. Myers, FL, died Saturday, June 11, 2016 at her Columbus home with family by her side. She was born July 4, 1929 in Cincinnati, OH, daughter of George and Margaret (Staubitz) Mahlerwein. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, she will be sorely missed by her daughter Larae A. Watkins (Kevin Bacon) of Macomb, IL and son-in-law Paul Varhol of Prospect, CT; her four grandchildren, Alex and Amanda Varhol, Maylin and Kaili Bacon; her sister Lois Heuerman, Petosky, MI and her brother Delmar Mahlerwein, Wilmington, OH and many nieces, nephews, friends and former students. Carol was preceded in death by her husband John W. Watkins in 2002 and daughter Margaret W. Varhol in 2015. Carol received a Bachelor's degree from Capital University. Carol was a medical technologist and established the Medical Laboratory Technology program at Columbus State before retiring as interim dean of the College of Allied Health. Carol was a member of the American Society of Medical Technologists and frequently served as a program reviewer for NAACLS (National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences). She was an active member of Advent Evangelical Lutheran Church and also attended Messiah Lutheran Church in North Ft. Myers, Florida. Friends may call 4-7 pm Monday, June 20, 2016 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, OH 43221. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at Advent Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3660 Kenny Road with interment to follow in Kingwood Memorial Park.
