Charles Aurelius Moore, Ph.D., P.E., a resident of Columbus and Hide-A-Way Hills, Ohio, passed peacefully on September 25, 2021. Chuck was born on June 3, 1940 to Charles Aurelius Moore, Sr. and Annie Marie (Kesler) Moore in Durham, North Carolina. Chuck graduated from Durham High School. He received a B.S. degree from Duke University, an M.A. from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Chuck taught Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, Cornell University and The Ohio State University. He began teaching at OSU in 1972, developing courses in soil mechanics and numerical methods. Chuck was twice awarded the Lichtenstein Memorial Award for faculty excellence in the combination of teaching, research, practice, administration, and professional activities. Chuck retired as Professor Emeritus from full-time teaching in 2008.
Chuck spent many summers restoring homes in Olde Town East, Columbus. As a long-time resident of OTE, he worked on the development of an Area Plan for the Near East Side, compiled GIS data to support an area rezoning, and helped with the creation of the Bryden Road Historic District.
Chuck, a trained tenor, began singing as a child. He sang in numerous choirs throughout his life, most recently at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church near the OSU campus.
Chuck grew up wandering in the woods, fishing, checking landslides, counting birds, and hiking, usually with a dog. He enjoyed being outside and was an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Christine Frances Donaldson, and by their son, Benjamin Donaldson Moore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Aurelius Moore, Sr. and Annie Marie (Kesler) Moore.
The family wishes to especially thank the many caregivers at English Garden, Wesley Ridge Retirement Community, and Wesley Hospice for the care they provided during Chuck's remaining months. Their knowledge and compassion helped all of us, including his dog, get to the end of a long journey. Thank you.
