Claudette Lucille Pfeifer (nee Couillard), 90, wife of the late Philip Anthony Pfeifer, passed from this life peacefully from the accumulated impact of Parkinson's Disease on February 17, 2021 in Columbus, Ohio. As was her custom, Claudette was adorned that day in a stylish outfit and
lipstick.
Claudette was born on November 10, 1930 in Dearborn, Michigan. Her parents were Grace and Emile Couillard. Claudette was the oldest of ten children. She is survived by sisters Anne, Estelle, Elaine, Mary Margaret, Valerie, and brothers Jerry and Jim. Predeceasing Claudette were sister Jeanette and brother Paul. Claudette graduated from Sacred Heart High School in
Dearborn and married the love of her life, Phil Pfeifer, in 1950.
While living in a succession of different cities over the years -- Anchorage, Alaska while Phil served in the US Army, the Detroit Area, New Castle, Indiana, Dayton, Ohio and in retirement Salem, South Carolina -- Phil and Claudette lovingly raised a family of seven children. Claudette
is survived by daughters Suzanne (John) Burke, Mary Breech, Judy (Ray, deceased) Prendeville, Paulette (Steve) Davis, Jackie (Tim) Butler, and son Joe (Randy). Claudette is predeceased by her son Chris. Claudette was the proud grandmother of nineteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Claudette loved all her siblings, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren deeply and without measure and we all felt her devotion with every conversation.
Phil was the public face of the Pfeifer Family, but Claudette was its glue and soul. Friend, family, or stranger was always welcome in Claudette's home, and she had ample room in her warm heart to treat everyone she met as the most important person in her life. Claudette lived with
style, grace, and humility, putting everyone's needs and welfare above hers.
Claudette was curious, inquisitive, and a life-long learner. While raising her family, she attended Marygrove College and achieved her BS Degree from Ball State University and Master's degree from Miami University. She taught Home Economics in Richmond, Indiana and public school in
Dayton and retired as a teacher. In her later years, Claudette loved to learn new things through online and traditional classes, achieving the status of Master Gardener, and becoming adept at social media so she could communicate more frequently with her children and grandchildren.
Claudette was an adventurous traveler in her retirement years, treasuring trips with her beloved Phil.
Consistent with her philosophy of placing others before her, Claudette also served her Church and community in countless capacities, including in her later years in Keowee Key, SC as a tutor, Soup Kitchen volunteer, and driving the infirm to appointments and shopping. Claudette was a one-of-a-kind Mom, Grammie, and Great Grammie. We are blessed to have learned from her unique style of compassion, elegance, and grace.
