I only met Uncle Dave twice. He came to our wedding and his brothers funeral. He was a very funny and loving man. Mike got to see him right before he died. I'm so glad for that. He loved his Uncle. Him and Kenny are in heaven now talking about who's caught the bigger fish!  God bless this family for two great people are in heaven now. Love and will miss them both. You will forever be remembered in our hearts and everyday lives with the wonderful memories and lessons you have instilled in each of us.

I carried the rings down the isle when Dave married my sister. That is the earliest major memories I have of him. 

Growing up Dave was a big part of my  childhood. He taught me how to shoot, to  hunt, fish, drive a stick shift, took me frog  gigging, wrestled with me, and spent time.  

I have so many memories of Dave.  As Debby said, the Bon fires, walks in the woods.  Dave also taught me, my friend and his nephews how to snipe hunt (smiles) he left us holding the bag lol

Traci, Jerry, I am so sorry for the passing of your Dad. And Linda my heart goes out to you.   He was a great man and so glad I  had him in my life.   He is loved

I am very sorry for your loss.  I was Dave’s sister –in-law for many years and have a few memories I would like to share.

Quite a few years ago Dave and I decided to take scuba lessons.  I was actually surprised he wanted to because he never really liked to swim.  

We attended class ten Saturday’s in a row.  Once we got in the pool Dave always struggled to stay on top of the water.  If he wasn’t actively and continually paddling he would sink.  At first we couldn’t understand why he had to work so hard.  Then we figured it out.  It was because he didn’t have any body fat to help keep him afloat.  (No wonder it escaped me.)

One of our assignments was to practice buddy breathing.  We’d swim around on top, with our face in the water, and practice our newly learned emergency technique.  After a few laps around the pool he said, “Stop!”  Before I could ask why, Dave did a surface dive to the bottom of the pool.  I was surprised and confused at what he was doing.  When he resurfaced he said the mouth piece had pulled his teeth out.  He had to go find them.  We laughed.


Around the same decade several of us decided to go white water rafting.  It always looked exciting and we were eager to give it a try.  Our group consisted of Dave, Jerry, my brother Mike, our friend Kevin, and I.  We were pumped.  We couldn’t wait to get on the water. And once there we weren’t disappointed.  The spring rains had been heavy that year and the rapids had extra zip to them.  We loved it. 

The first part of the day we were going over class 1-4 rapids.  We would stop after each set of rapids and the guide would tell us about the next set we would be going over.  In the afternoon we were going over class 5 rapids.  They said there was a “hole” in the water and we would bounce off that to get momentum and shoot us down stream.  Cool!
I had no idea what a “hole” in the water was but when I actually saw it, it was scary!  As we got closer to it someone yelled out the wrong order and we paddled right into it.  The boat flipped, we all fell out and now we were swimming the raging rapid instead of gliding over its top.

One by one we all popped up and were rescued by other boaters.  Everyone was accounted for and safe except for Jerry.  Dave’s emotions started with concern that turned into fear, which was quickly replaced by panic.  As other rafts would come by we’d ask if they had Jerry.  No.  Another raft.  No Jerry.  Another and another.  Nope.  Terror was griping Dave as he would ask about his boy.

Finally, a raft came by and there was Jerry, safe and sound.  The relief that washed over all of us was unbelievable.  Dave almost collapsed with relief.  His son was alive.
When the trip was over we all thought about the tragedy that almost happened.  Thank God it didn’t.  The love Dave has for his son was obvious that day.


Dave would take Mike and me on walks in the woods, fishing, target shooting and swimming at Bidwell’s Lake.  And one of his favorite things to do was to build a fire and gaze at the flame.  Growing up we had a lot of fun with Dave.

Sorry for your families loss... Mike always talked often of his grandfather and how he shared in his love of fishing... Mike from what you have told me of your grandfather you truly have grown into the same remarkable man that you say he was...Love you Shelly Clark

He was there by my side for many years, through thick and thin, for good times and bad.  He was there for his children, he was there for my children, and for many others. He was a kid at heart, loving children, toys and dogs.  He loved the earth, the blue sky, the green grass, hummingbirds,fishing and all of nature.  He set a good example because he lead a good life and was a good man.  He truly understood me and loved me anyway, whether I was right or wrong ( I was usually right)  I loved him like a brother and will miss him dearly.  I know he is at Peace along with his brother, his mother and dad.  His departure from this earth will leave another hole in my heart, but I have been honored to know this man.  Rest in Peace Uncle Dave 

JoAnn Fitzpatrick

Dave was truly a special man.  Growing up around the Fitzpatrick family was its own reward.  I have many fond memories of Dave, but one has always stood out, odd as it may seem.  

I remember a short conversation Dave and I had just before Christmas.  As usual, Dave was sitting on the sofa and was watching a sporting event on the T.V.  I remarked on the Christmas tree (that was always set up every year to the left of the sofa) about how brilliant it was with all the lights.  Dave said, "Yeah, I like lights.  Lots of Christmas tree lights".  Just that short exchange taught a young man that it was ok to grow up and still be a kid at heart.  So much wisdom.  Do we really every know how and when we affect the lives of others?  Thank you Dave, for your kindness and wisdom.

A small tribute to one special man, He didn't say much, but when he did, you might want to stop and listen. Because, you knew you were going to hear something Amazing.  Thank you Uncle Dave, for always being there for us, teaching us to love with all of our hearts, and Keep family close.  I know you up there with Dad, laughing and acting silly like you two do. But if you could, would you do me One last favor?  Ask Dad to wrap his arms around you and Give you a Big Hug from Us....  We will always  Love you

Endless thanks to my nephew Mike. In Dads last days what he did for dad was utterly amazing. Paps knew he could count on Mike and is up in heaven bragging on him now. Miss you Paps!

I know that you are with Uncle Kenny and Grandma and Grandpa now and all of you are enjoying yourselves. Until we can be together again Fish On Dad!!!
