David is my cousin.  I remember playing with him and visiting his parents' home years ago.  We went different ways and I don't think I have been around him much, if at all, since the 1960s.  But my widowed mother and he wrote back and forth. I appreciate his thoughtfulness in writing to his 87 year old aunt, my mother.  She would often say to me, "David wrote me a letter" and tell me what he had written or showed me his letter. I wish I had taken time to thank him for thinking of my mother and brightening her day by writing to her.  Hopefully, his family might read this note and accept my thanks for David and appreciation for my cousin's kindness toward my mother.  I remembered the family in prayer.

To the family of MSG Johnson, 
I'm crushed to hear of MSG Johnson's passing. Every time I think about it, my heart is broken. I just found out about his passing a couple of days ago. He helped me regain my morale in being in the Army as a young Soldier after having many trials and tribulations in both my personal and professional career. 

I have been in the Army for over 25 years, with him as one of my major influences early in my Army Reserve career. I'm hurt that he did not get to truly enjoy his retirement with his lovely wife. However, he lived his life with much adventure and endurance. We miss you MSG Johnson.....MSG Jernell Logan, US Army Reserves.

It was an honor to serve with, play softball and know DJ. He was the quiet soldier who was always there when you needed him to pitch a game before heading to Roosters for our weekly post game ritual of friends, food and family...one big family. Praying God will heal the hearts of his family during this time of great loss. Thanks for all the great memories DJ! -Big Rich

I was happy to get reacquainted with Dave at his retirement.  His leadership and, in particular, his friendship to all his "comrades" at the 2291st will not be forgotten.

When I think of Dave one thing comes to mind…One of a Kind!  He was an exceptional man and a tireless Patriot.  DJ was definitely one special person and this world was better with him in it.  Words just can’t say enough about all the positive influences DJ had on everyone he came in contact with.  I was a lucky person to have been able to share some good times with DJ, whether it was doing Army “stuff”, playing softball or volleyball, drinking a cold one in the parking  lot, or enjoying some wings at Roosters (not the pitchers of dark beer tho!).  He will be missed more than we can imagine but his memories will be with us forever.  Rest in Peace DJ

If one can spend time with another individual and see certain traits within that person that they would want to emulate, then that person is unique and special.  Dave was that kind of person.  I don't remember Dave ever speaking ill of anyone else, his reserved demeanor, his thoughtful interactions with my son, his dry wit that would catch you off guard followed by that very slight grin.
It was only a year ago that we were all playing softball, guys that had been playing together for years.  Dave on the mound, the team winning, losing, always followed by a cold beer in the parking lot, Roosters, wings all around and Dave with a huge salad.
Good times.  We'll all miss him.
