

Dawn Cheryl Smith was born in Columbus, Ohio on December 30, 1946 and departed this life on November 1, 2013. She was preceded in death by her parents Booker T. Lucas, Sr. and Dorothy Helen (Johnson) Lucas; brother, Booker T. Lucas, Jr., and nephew Darren C. White. Dawn attended Columbus Public Schools graduating from Central High School. She attended the Franklin University earning an Associates Degree and Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Dawn was employed by Dun and Bradstreet, Honeywell and the State of Ohio. She retired from the State of Ohio, Department of Development in 2004 with 32 years of service. As her father was an accomplished musician, Dawn found herself involved in music from an early age; playing piano and singing with a variety of groups both in church and with independent choruses. Dawn was one of the original members of the historic (Annie P.) Scott Chorale. She also sang with the Michael Frazier Chorale, which appeared on several television programs, and the St. Dominic Ecumenical Choir for Christmas concerts. Dawn was also involved in community service and several charitable organizations including the Eastside Sertoma Club and the Columbus Area Youth Group Association. Dawn leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 46 years, Vance D. Smith; daughter, Monique L. Smith-Allen (Monte); step-children, Vance, Tanya and Antwan; grandson, Donivan L. Smith; sisters, Shirley L. Sowards, Cara L. Caldwell (Richard), Sandra K. Lucas and sister-in-law, Joe Ann Lucas, all of Columbus, Ohio. Also left to cherish her memory are six great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 11:00AM with visitation one hour prior at Bethel AME Church, 2021 Cleveland Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43211. Rev. Dale Snyder officiating.
