I am just now learning of the passing of Doris.  Sorry to be so late in sharing this memory.  We met in 1989 when I first came to Hilliard City Schools as the Elementary Education Director.  Doris had volunteered to be part of a committee redesigning the science curriculum.  She was a valuable asset for this work and as a teacher.
Her passion for science and the teaching of it to students was impressive.  She was a force for creating interest and following a scientific inquiry.  It permeated all subjects
 that she taught.  She made a difference.


I went to college with Doris at Wisconsin State University at River Falls, WI.  we were both in elementary Ed.  Also, Russell's Mother, Mildred, introduced my mother and father who later were married, on a blind date...lots of memories to share.  I still live in Star Prairie.  Retired for over 30 years. Doris was a dynamo teacher and a joy in so many ways. We will all miss the sound of her distinctive voice and always ready laugh. Please feel the peace and comfort of the Lord as you all mourne. I'm sorry to have missed her service but hearing, "It  is Well With My Soul" in the video is a comfort in our mourning.

I was so sorry to learn of Doris’s passing. My daughter had her as a teacher, and “Mrs. Utgard” gave her the confidence she needed. I am grateful. She was so full of energy and an inspiration—one of those people who made the world a better place. My condolences to her family.

Like a lot of people, I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Utgard as a 5th grade teacher at Hilliard Elementary.  That was 35ish years ago.  You don't realize it at the time, but eventually you look back and realize how much certain people left their mark or helped point you in the right direction.  Mrs. Utgard was definitely one of those people.  A great person and a great teacher.  She will be missed!

I loved Mrs. Utgard! I was the 3rd Chute to have her, and she was always such a huge support to me and my passion for music. I even got to play her in our 5th grade musical.  Racing across the stage in her hurried style of travel got me quite a few laughs since the whole school was familiar with her trademark pace. I’m now in my 21st year of teaching choir and I still talk about her in my classes; from the eating of her orange rinds, to the brain food jar, to my uncanny memory of the 206 bones in the human body to this day because of the after school club she led. She will be missed but I have no doubt she lives on in the endless students like me she positively impacted.

Russell, I am so sorry for your loss. I would not be the man I am today if I hadn’t been in Mrs. Utgard’s 5th grade class at Hilliard Elementary. I passionately believe her love of science is one of the main reasons I teach it at Darby High School. She was a warm but firm teacher and I am so happy to call her one of my teachers. I had an absolute blast being in her class.

I worked with Doris at The Discovery Shop.  She was a feisty, smart, energetic and totally  honest woman with an absolute heart of gold.  I loved when she was there--we found many things to laugh about and enjoy.  When I think of her, I smile.  I am so sorry for your loss.

I have the fondest memories of Doris. She taught my son in 5th grade but became my teacher as well. She had such a practical and loving way about her. I will cherish my memories of being her neighbor and water walking together in the evenings at Hastings pool. She cared about my child well beyond his time in her classroom. Thank you Doris for being a light in the darkness and just what I needed. Thank you Jane for letting me know. My deepest sympathy to the Utgard family.

My son (Charlie Bentley) had the pleasure of having the best fifth grade teacher ever. She taught him to work hard and enjoy school and she had many laughs because of him.  She was a very loyal OSU buckeye fan and excited when she got to meet his son, Connor at one of the games.  Deepest sympathies to the entire family.

Dear Russell, our condolences on the death of Doris.  We will always remember her dedication to the Hilliard Elementary students and her deep love for teaching science. She always went out of her way to provide her classroom with resources to enrich her lessons. After her retirement, my wife always requested Doris to sub in her room knowing that Doris would make sure that her students would have a quality day. We know she will be remembered by her former students for years to come.

We are so grateful for the love Doris showed our family. She showered our kids with so much love whenever they were together and truly made them feel seen. Her patience with Eleanor each time they spoke on the phone was such a gift. Our lives are so much richer because we know her. She will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Doris was such a kind and caring teacher. She cared about the students and the staff. She worked tirelessly to help her students and continued even after her retirement. It was a privilege to work with Doris and know her. She will be missed.

My son, who is 39, had Mrs. Utgard in 5th grade. Still one of his favorite teachers. He still knows all his rocks and minerals. She loved her students and made them love learning. My son is also now a teacher. On a side note, a couple years ago I saw her at the hospital for I am a nurse. I went in to introduce myself and she smiled and said she remembered  my son. Few people have had such a lasting and loving impact on my life as Doris.  She was a beautiful and kind neighbor and friend. Thank you for always being you, Doris. I will miss you.
