I sent this email to Ed on November 3rd, four days before his passing.  I just learned about Ed's passing today.  I thought I'd share the note as I will miss our good natured banter before THE Game.  I will miss Ed and will be thinking of him this weekend. Ed was a wonderful person and friend from my days of working with him at JM Smucker to the subsequent years of keeping in touch for our passionate rivalry on opposite sides of the football field.

Ed,

I hope this email finds you well.

I was thinking about you last week as we were at my son Ken's rowing regatta in Upper Arlington on the Scioto River.  Great event.  The New Trier High School boys did quite well and Ken's boat placed second.  Smiling faces in the Harris family in Columbus...one of the few times in a while.

Well, it's that time of year again and once again the Buckeyes look unstoppable.  They probably have the best team I've seen in a long time.  The transition from Meyer to Day hasn't skipped a beat and maybe is even better.

We always hold out a glimmer of hope for the The Game, but unless Justin Fields, JK Dobbins, Chris Olave and Chase Young decide to take the day off, we are in for a rough ride.

Same bet, $1, straight up for bragging rights.

Was introduced to Ed for the first time in 2014,when I asked him about wanting to play golf with the seniors .

I was so bad that on the 16 th hole ,Ed being such a straight shooter informed me that he can not take my $ 5 dollars . 

From his honest input decided to get better at golf ! 

Was happy to take Ed's  money after his coaching .

Have stayed in touch with Ed throughout 2019 .Very sad to read of his passing .

Will miss him as our leader of senior golf .

My favorite thing about going into the gym was discussing Ed’s texts from Hilton Head, Smucker’s and associates bad mouthing the Buckeyes and Ed’s carefully crafted responses when the Buckeyes prevailed

Mr. Dountz was a great man that loved his golf. We always enjoyed his frequent visits to the golf shop where we could just "hang out" and tell stories. His passion to build the Senior Golf Program at TCC was undeniable and we owe him many thanks because of where it is today.The entire Golf Staff would like to extend our condolences to the Dountz family.

Friendship with Ed dates back to Ashville School Days.  We shared a lot together in our youth, including good relationships and memories with each other's parents, and Ed's sister Becky. My relationship with Becky and Ed continued at OSU.  Ed was the best man at our wedding.  

Through the years, especially after Ed and Molly returned to Ohio, with Smuckers, I sense it was more than a coincidence we frequently resided in the same communities--- we resided in the same locations, Akron, Columbus, and Hilton Head, during some of those years since 1975.   Margie and I treasure the many dinners, times and events, together with Molly and Ed, including sharings blessings and disappointments as true friends do, 

Molly and Margie had to endure our Ashville up-bringing at times, and Ed and I publically acknowledged, at least to each other, they were not only patient and tolerant, --they still loved us; they were "sweethearts" for that.  

To Molly and family, 
It is a time of loss, but also a time to reflect on the blessings enjoyed during Ed's life. Our prayers that God's strength and love provide comfort to all in the days and years ahead.

I was blessed to have met Ed during my tenure at Ohio State's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.  He was a generous supporter of students, a wonderful volunteer, and wise advisor.  I will always be grateful to have shared part of my journey in philanthropy with him.  My deepest sympathies to you, Molly, and your family as you mourn this loss.  May love and fond memories comfort you now and always.

Ed was the consummate gentleman, a true business professional, an avid golfer, and a dear friend. His golfing skills were only surpassed by his dancing abilities! Darla and I enjoyed our far too short experiences with him at TCCMV and in visits to Hilton Head Island. It was always fun and informative to exchange knowledge about what was new on the island, especially about all the good golf courses and new restaurants. 

To those of us who knew Ed well, he was "Mr. Smucker's" to us. Every time we eat at a restaurant that serves Smucker's jellies, we will always did and always will think of Ed.

I was always amazed how much Ed knew about what was going on in Dublin and at TCCMV. He seemed to have an innate ability to pick up on the news, sometimes seemingly before it was announced! :)

Ed will be sincerely missed by the TCCMV Seniors Group, for which he was the "Commissioner" for many years. Thank you Ed for your willing service to the Group. We'll miss taking his $5 during our Tuesday and Thursday matches. :)

Darla and I will miss him too. We want to wish Molly and the Dountz family our heartfelt condolences for your loss.

Nancy and I offer our condolence to Molly and the family of Ed.  We met Molly and Ed in Hilton Head Island.  Us being Hawkeye fans and of course they being Buckeye fans.
