By the way an earlier statement by about dad's favorite songs had an attachment with the Song "You are my Sunshine."   He used to sing that to Sue for what seemed like 24 hours a day sometimes.

We seem to be at that stage of life where we find ourselves bidding farewell to those who were such a tremendous force in our lives.

Ed was always the only one of our 4 parents who could truly relax and enjoy life.  It was the gift he left all of us, despite the chaos and lunacy all around is and him.

My prayers are with the family

My one hope is that the brothers  and sister have an opportunity to carve out a few hours to share stories and celebrate Ed's life and think about the moments each of you remember most with him. It is those moments that are still with me as I think about my Mom.

I'm so sorry to hear of this.

Of all my uncles, Ed was my favorite.   He was the one adult that Lee and I 
could count on to actually join (instead of admonish) us in our crazy escapades.  He was always up for an adventure on Nemahbin Lake, whether it was turtle hunting, fishing, exploring, or just a wee bit of trespass.  In many cases, after Lee and I had been caught doing something that justified a good paddling, Ed would defend us against the wrath of Barb and Joan. "Leave 'em alone.  They're just boys.", are the words I remember best from him.

I can't speak for Lee, but, had it not been for Ed, I know I wouldn't have had as much fun growing up.  I am proud and thankful to have been his nephew.

Please pass my condolences on to your entire family.

Thank you for the poignant eulogies.
 
It's only been relatively recently (last 10 or 20 years, who knows) that I realized how lucky I was to have been raised by my father who was actually a kid when he had me.  Whether it was making a red car out of scrap wood and a washing machine motor, a boomerang out of plywood, or a radio out of vacuum tubes, he was always up for it. Later he went on to welding up a dune buggy, restoring on old 1940s bulldozer, making a wine barrel, and automating an awning.  Even at a relatively advanced age, he took to potatoe guns, several of which models we tested at the farm.
 
My father was an engineer stuck in the body of a salesman.
 
He taught me how to saw wood, hypnotize a frog, lead a pheasant, rebuild an internal combustion engine, drink whiskey, and, at least I think, be a generally decent person.
 
Lots of things come to mind, but two, I think, tell the story of my dad.
 
When I was very young, fiive or six I suppose, we were fishing at the Lake, off the boathouse that he swore was the best place to fish.  I hooked a Northern and reeled it to the boat.  Who knows how big it was, but it remains huge in my memory.  As I reeled it to the boat, it spit the hook or broke the line, and Dad jumped up and dived into the water.  He swears he got his arms around it but it slipped away.  
 
Later, when we lived in Rocky River (I was no older than 6th garde), my dad brought an old 3 HP gas motor home that he got from the garbage.  He sold garbage trucks.  He fastened it to a board, attached 6 inches of Schedule 80 pipe for an exhaust, gave me a can of gas, and let me to play with it.  I'd fire that thing up and let it run.  One time I stopped it with a screwdriver by grounding out the spark plug, but I was also grounded.  I still remember rolling across the back yard with a huge shock.  Later, my dad explained magneto coils to me.
 
He really enjoyed life.

When I look back I remember when I was little, maybe 5 or 6 and someone had done something unacceptable...not sure what it was....He lined us all up in the family room and proceeded with the slow process of removing his belt. I don’t know if he ever actually used it on any of us, but allot can be said for spanking your kids, and I know now it is soooo politically incorrect. But to this day I never ever would think of dad as harsh or mean. But when he would snap that belt.....you knew you were in trouble. Later that day I told him he didn’t love me..to which he replied "why would you say such a thing", I told him...."because he never spank me"......to which he put me over his knee and lovingly gave me a few pats on the rear.....so even at a young age I knew he loved me even if he disciplined us. I remember Tom hitting me in the head with a screw driver(by accident, of course, but the truth there may never be known, hahahha) and walking home and Tom being so scared of the trouble he was going to be in...or the time Paul we had driven to the junk yard for something for your car and slamming my finger in a door....I cried all the way home....and you just knowing that the wrath of dad would follow...The ultimate protector!!! Even so that when I got a bad grade I in College in Calculus...he called the professor to make his opinion heard...I probably deserved the grade....but he still was there....
he was always there for me in the bad times and always had good advice and had my best interest at heart....I don’t care how old you get....a girl always needs her daddy!!! I will miss him more than anyone will ever know....I hope he knows how loved he truly was......

My greatest memories of dad are of the farm.  Before the idea of HOLES every became popular, digging holes to develop character, there were footers.  I remember Paul and I digging and re-digging those footers over the wet season for what seemed like months.  Dad would get us up at 5am on Saturdays help us into the car and roll us out to the farm where we would dig those footers.  Working on that house at the farm as I look back on it provided many hours of time to bond with dad.   I also remember trying to hang that drywall on those ceilings.  We never worked so hard and laughed so much as we tried to position that drywall and hurry to get nails in it.

As you remember his favorite saying was, “we aren’t going to worry about that”.   Other great phrases that come to mind . . 
Quick Carl-  His uncanny nack to everything fast
Jury Rig-  This was his all encompassing phrase for adapting to what needed to be done(although he did have an alternate phrase).
Bit ya- Whenever we would get electrocuted working with electricity.

Dad and I spoke about business often.  I think he really saw me as a mini-me.   I traveled Ohio just like him. I would call him and say “dad have you ever been in Andover?”  We would go from there. I had sales success and failures like him. He gave me lots of advice that I eagerly listened to.  His best was , you as a business man will always be remembered by your ideas, integrity and work ethic.  Some will be smarter, more gifted, born to a better situation, but you can always be the hardest worker.  You can control that.  He had great work ethic, ideas and integrity.  In fact I would say unequaled.

Finally I have a memory of when we were throwing a football when I was about 8 or 9.  I would dive for balls and try to make acrobatic catches.  He stopped play and said Tom come here.  Put his hand on my shoulder and said. . “don’t make it look hard, make it look easy. . effortless.”

He made it look easy.  He made it look effortless.  He was elegant!

The Bleils and Wagoners will always appreciate the best experiences from the gang of 8 interactions – the 4 Bleil Boys and the Wahg-ners. There we were in a time when there were nearly no restrictions on the adventures to be had and we had the place to experience them all. I can recall the visits at the lake where we would pile into the aluminum boat, as early as possible, and venture off, not returning until dinner. No questions asked and no third degree inquiry as to what we did or where we were. We were doing the things our parents enjoyed when they were younger, and the enthusiastic energy of our actions was clear enough. There are countless memories that fit into a small cut of the many years we all have been around, but the time seems endlessly detailed. We hopped into a blood red wooden go-cart for a spin around the yard. We smoked corn silk from a corn cob pipe, we built forts, we ventured into the woods, went on hikes in the remote hillbilly country of Ohio, tried to snare wild jackasses on the farm, joked about our relatives, caught fish on bare hooks, caught turtles, nearly killed each other with bow and arrows, teamed up with the Engstroms on even more gang like behavior, rode bikes to the Pharmacy in Delafield to buy Playboys at under 8 years old, busted expensive aquariums with a round of golf in your basement, and generally enjoyed life. Somewhere in the mix, Uncle Ed always had a hand. He was a source of adventure, exploration, joy, and humor. We, all 4 of us Bleil boys, would anxiously await the opportunity for a visit from Uncle Ed and the kids, or better yet, the exchange program to Columbus Oh-ha. We recognized in you guys and Sue, the same joy of life he expressed in everything we saw him do and every experience we shared with him. I wouldn’t give up any of those moments for anything, and I’m sure that was our parent’s goal all along. I’m sure Uncle Ed must have put it to words somewhere along the way.  

We were all extremely fortunate to have had Uncle Ed take us on his adventures and wax poetic about life and its lessons. We take the best traits he shared with us and do the best we can with it.

My father taught me so many things that you don’t learn in life or in school.  Many lessons came from enjoying the outdoors.  We did not just hike, we explored. We discovered things and learned about them. We sought out exceptional beauty in all of the flora and fauna.  We found salamanders, turtles, fossils and all varieties of natures treasures.  We discovered things an untrained outdoorsman would simply hike by.  Dad taught us the importance of honesty, dependability and punctuality.  I had many lessons about business.  Whether these were taught directly or observed, they are practices that I try to never forget.  Dad taught me how to drive. Not just drive a car, but also a truck, a tractor, a bulldozer and all the implements found on the farm.  While driving with my dad he was always giving tips and instructions on how to observe hazards and beauty along the road.  Most importantly, my dad gave me lessons in family life and fatherhood.  I like to think I learned these lessons well.

Yes The memories of this piece are forever in my mind....He was an amazing pianist.He was always larger than life to me and he was not only a gentleman, but a gentle man.

No tribute to dad would be complete without his favorite song.  Dad was an accomplished pianist and played for what weemed like hours.  Just a month before he passed on he played his favorite song of all times.  Chopstix can be played by a 2 year old or by a concert pianist like my father.  This was his favorite version and the one he played.

My father set a standard for fatherhood that is a model for all.  His life revolved arround his family.  He was totally unselfish with his time(no golf, no distracting past times) he focused entirely on work and family.  The original McGiver he could solve virtually any problem and improve almost any process.   He preached work ethic, integrity and creativity.   The life lessons he has taught me will never die.  His spirit lives in all of us who were blessed to have spent time with him.  I love you dad and will miss you.
