

Emanuel “Mike” Sergakis, age 87, of New Albany, Ohio, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at St Ann’s Hospital. Loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Emanuel was born September 10, 1922 in Burgettstown, PA to the late Gus and Christina Sergakis. He was the oldest of four siblings, Ann, Helen (deceased), and Peter. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Irene, his three sons Michael, Theodore, and William, his seven grandchildren, Christina, Alexandra, Theodore II, Michael Jr, Nicholas, Parker, and Jessica Dodd. Emanuel attended Union High School in Burgettstown and graduated in June 1940. After high school, he enlisted in the army at 20 and served our country during WWII as an artillery gunner earning the rank of sergeant in the 3rd Division, Fifth Army. He was in major battles at Anzio, Italy, the Riviera in Southern France, and Batavia, Germany. Awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery. Honorably discharged after 30 months of service in 1945.
After the war, he attended the Institute of Scientific Management in Pittsburgh, PA. and graduated one year later with a diploma in time and motion study. Enrolled at the Institute of Scientific Management in Pittsburgh, PA earning a diploma in 1950. Enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh in 1950 earning both a business degree (BBA) in 1954 and engineering degree (BSIE) in 1956. Enrolled at Ohio University in 1970 earning an MBA in 1972.
Joined Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, MI, in 1956 and became supervisor of the cold heading dept. Started with Western Electric Co, Indianapolis, IN, in 1957. Transferred to Winston Salem, NC in 1958 and Dover, NJ in 1960 before a final transfer to Columbus, OH in 1967 where he worked until his retirement in 1984 after 27 yrs of service.
During this time, he belonged to and headed up many organizations. His favorite hobbies were stamp collecting and coins. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many wonderful items. His family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Friday, June 4 at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd. (at Beecher Rd) Gahanna. Prayer service at 6:30 pm on Friday. Funeral service 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5 at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High St. Fr. Michael Kontos officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
