Dr. Emil E. Sattler passed away on February 1, 2015 at the age of 80. He was a graduate of The University of Michigan, where he received his bachelor and doctorate degrees in German literature. He also obtained a master's degree at Kent State University, where he taught for over 30 years. Before his retirement, he was the Chair of the Department of German and Slavic Languages. He was active in the American Association of University Professors ("AAUP"), serving as the President of the Kent State Chapter and Ohio Chair of Committee A. Because of his commitment to faculty rights, he received the Ohio AAUP Robert E. Kennedy Award for Academic Freedom. Emil was a man of many talents. He was a scholar of Franz Kafka and 17th century German Baroque literature. He loved to paint and sketch, and was an avid gardener and reader. Back in the day, he taught himself several computer languages. He was a Michigan fan, and enjoyed immensely haircuts with Hank so that could talk about Bo and the glory days of Michigan football. Emil's true passion was food. He had the ability to recreate any meal he tasted and was a master at developing his own recipes. Few had a greater touch with a pie crust (except his mother). He loved fine wine and unblended scotch and found joy in every meal he prepared. His English muffins and oatmeal cookies will be missed across Central Ohio. Although he loved food, his greatest joy was his family and friends. Emil loved his children and grandchildren and took pleasure in every moment with them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Casimira Sattler; his brother, Carl; his son, James; and his step grandson, Teddy Bovard. He is survived by his wife, Mimi Dane; his brother, Dick (Linda) Sattler; his sons Jack (Cathy) Sattler and Kyle (Sabrina) Sattler; his granddaughters Nicole and Jennifer Sattler; his grandson, Mitch Sattler; and his step granddaughter Tayler Gibbs; his great-granddaughter, Ava Heck; the pet-boys, Pollux, Casper and Leo, as well as many relatives and friends, including his life-long friends Fritz and Barbara Thiel, Jeff Ferriell, Cheryl Hacker and Kristi Brown. Family will receive friends Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 2-4 at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Flying Horse Farms, a camp for children with serious illnesses, at www.flyinghorsefarms.org or 5260 St. Rt. 95, Mt. Gilead, Ohio 43338.
