
Eugene or "Gene" was born January 12, 1943 in Flushing, New York to the late Eugene A. and Winifred T. Johnson. Also preceded in death by his brother Douglas R. Johnson and nephew Eric Johnson.
After graduating from Huntington HS in Huntington, NY, Gene earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration at the University of Tennessee and later his MBA from Clemson University & Furman University in Greenville, SC.
Commissioned as an Ensign in 1965, Gene served as Communications Officer and Navigator on the USS Canisteo and on the USS Mountrail based in Norfolk, VA. Following his discharge, he worked for the Abitibi Corporation, W.R. Grace & Company-Cryovac Division and U.S. Plywood.
In 1972, Gene married Ruth Mary Winning and had one son Christopher Alexander Johnson born in 1977. They lived in Winston Salem, NC and Gene worked for R.J. Reynolds until moving to Worthington, OH in 1983 where he was Vice President of Finance & CFO of Combibloc until retirement in December of 2000.
For the next five years Gene had a Consulting Practice and was Part time Adjunct Professor at Franklin University, Ohio State University and Ohio Dominican University.
Gene traveled extensively in the United States, Europe, and South America for business and pleasure. While he followed football, basketball, hockey, and Lacrosse, he was an avid golfer although he would say "not very good". As a member of Brookside Golf & Country Club in Columbus for 28 years, he served on many committees and was a Board Member and Treasurer. He dearly loved the Brookside "Family" of Staff and Members and treasured friendships of everyone.
Gene will be greatly missed by his loving wife Ruth; son, Chris; sister, Marilyn Golden of Centennial, Colorado, and many other extended family members, as well as so many dear friends throughout the community.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Schoedinger on High Street in Worthington, OH with internment at the Dayton National Cemetery at 4400 W. Third Street, Dayton, OH 45428.
