William F. Staub (Fred), retired Professor at The Ohio State University, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 13th. Born at Hogs Creek, near Lima, on April 12, 1920, he was raised in Marion and later Galion, where he graduated from High School – an involved student with many sporting and academic honors. As a member of the BSA, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Fred received his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester, where he was recruited to play football. While there, he was active in numerous student organizations and was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. He started his teaching career at Upper Arlington High School where he also coached. Later moving to Mansfield, he taught and coached football at the high school and helped bring a State Championship to the 1949 Tygers. He met his wife of 67 years, Ruth, also a teacher, through mutual friends and they were married at Green Camp United Methodist Church on April 6, 1947. Becoming the Principal of Mansfield Senior High, he eventually left to further his education and upon receiving his Masters and Doctorate at The Ohio State University (with some time spent at the University of Chicago), taught at the Department of Education at that same institution for the remainder of his career. He loved to learn and share his knowledge and could always remember a student’s face and name, even decades later. His work positively touched the lives of many thousands. Fred had a passion for the English language, good humor and clever pun. An avid reader, he was always informed and stayed up to date with current affairs. Along with Ruth, he was a long term member of First Community Church where he served on the Governing Board and many other committees. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling which he and Ruth did extensively and refinishing antique furniture which he purchased at auction. Kind to all, he was always smiling and chose to focus on the good in people. He was a tremendous husband and father and a generous and loyal friend. Fred is preceded in death by his parents, George Walter and Margaret Ruth, his half brother Robert (Bob), his half sister (Mary Elizabeth), his brothers George and Dick, his sister Bonnie and his son, Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, his son, Jon (and his wife Susan), his grandchildren, Sara and Allison, Marcia Staub (his sister-in-law) and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be at First Community Church (South Campus in Marble Cliff) at 10am on Saturday, 12/20 with a celebration of life service at 11am, followed by a reception. Private interment will be at Marion Cemetery. Friends who wish may contribute to the Memory of Fred Staub, Upper Arlington Public Library, 2800 Tremont Rd. Upper Arlington, OH 43221.
