

Gary Richard Lanning, age 50, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. He was born in Columbus on January 10, 1962, and was a resident of Grove City. Gary was a graduate of the North High School Lost Class of 1980. He also studied diesel mechanics at the Northwest Career Center. He then graduated from the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy and served with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office for 23 years. During that time, he served for 9 ½ years at the Franklin County Jail, 8 ½ months at Franklin County Children’s Services, 6 years in Patrol, and 7 years Civil Bureau. He was directly responsible for saving the lives of 4 people during his service. Outside of work, Gary was a larger than life personality, known as “The Voice” for his deep and booming tone. He loved the relaxed lifestyle of the islands and was a Jimmy Buffett fan. He was also a fan of the New York Yankees and Minnesota Vikings. He enjoyed fishing and camping, and he especially loved spending time with his family and the friends he considered to be as close as family. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lorann Lanning; daughter, Elizabeth (Daniel) Fahy; mother, Dorothy Lanning; sister, Linda (Mike) Farrell; granddaughters, Allison and Caroline; great niece, Maria Eyerman; and many other extended family members and countless friends, especially John Banche, Michael and Carolynn Bostic, Susanna Raftery, Tony and Rhonda Cook, and Jim Burnett. He was preceded in death by his father, Don Lanning; and good friend, Brad Hosler. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2012, at the SCHOEDINGER NORRIS CHAPEL, 3920 Broadway, Grove City, where a Fraternal Order of Police service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Shawn Beauchamp officiating.
