Ian graduated from Cambridge University in 1948 with a medical degree. He immigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada that same year. While completing his medical training at Montreal General he met his wife Jean, a nurse. They were married June 10, 1950 in Cornwall, Ontario. In the following 15 years he practiced medicine and completed his board certification in Psychiatry and Neurology, they welcomed four children into their lives, and immigrated to the United States where he worked at the University of Minnesota hospitals as a psychiatrist. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Ohio State University from 1965- 1985. Ian authored and co-authored 5 textbooks on psychiatry and abnormal psychology.
Ian and Jean spent many happy retirement years together. They both became Coast Guard certified and traveled in their RV, towing their sailboat, to many destinations and experienced many memorable adventures. They traveled abroad many times. Their greatest joy came in being an active part in all of their grandchildren's lives; including winter ski trips, summer sailing trips, and taking all of their grandchildren to England. In recent years Ian felt truly privileged that he had lived to see his great-grandchildren born and experience their growing young lives. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean and his son, Robert Gregory. A private family service will be held in honor of his life. May he rest in eternal peace.
