

James P. Chambers, age 94, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, died Sunday, August 20, 2017 in Gahanna, Ohio. He was born February 12, 1923 in Chattanooga, Tenn., a son of the late James R. and Lucile Perry Chambers. James retired from the City of Columbus as Director of Human Services following over 25 years of service. A devoted father, grandfather and brother, he will be deeply missed by his children, Carla Chambers, Cedra (Charles) Westbrook, Cy Chambers, Charles (Nichole) Chambers and Clay (Cheryl) Chambers; his nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and special friend, Sophia George. Also survived by his brother, Ghentel (Priscilla) Chambers and sisters, Bettye Jo Buckner and Martina Miller; several nieces, nephews and many friends. Besides his parents, James was preceded in death by a daughter Jordina Tucker and sisters, Shirley Melrose, Willadean Simmons and LaVerne Stevenson. He attended Knoxville College where he played football and following World War II, returned to Tennessee State University and graduated with a degree in Agricultural Sciences with a minor in Education. In 1948 he married Juliette Epps and from that union they had five children. He was a longtime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He was a member of Rogers Memorial Baptist Church, Knoxville, TN and Union Grove Baptist Church in Columbus, OH. James enjoyed all kinds of jazz music, rooting for his Buckeyes and Browns and he loved to grill, especially his slow cooked homemade ribs- there were none better.
