James "Jim" Coomes

James William Coomes, age 79, passed away peacefully at home with Joyce, the love of his life, by his side. Jim proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. Jim was born October 13, 1939 in Evansville, IN to the late James Sr. and Emma Rose (Kaelin) Coomes, and spent his formative years in Stanley, KY. A graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School, he earned a Bachelor's Degree and MBA from the University of Dayton. God. Family. Country. These were the priorities in Jim's life. When Joyce Payne accepted his hand in marriage on December 28, 1963, a match made in heaven was established. Neither one ever took their marriage for granted. Following Jim's retirement from Ameritech, where he worked in the legal department, he began a successful and rewarding second career with Voya Financial Advisors (VFA). He was a very faithful member of St. James the Less Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic minister and was involved on the finance council and the capital campaign drives. In addition to his devoted wife Joyce, Jim leaves behind his children, Lisa Stunek of Cleveland, OH and Mark (Tanya) Coomes of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Joseph Stunek, Erika Stunek (fiancé Daniel Bonacci), and Anessa Coomes; sisters-in-law Shirley Allen, Marcia (Charles) Bradley and Martha Payne; many loving nieces, nephews and special cousins. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Martha Ann Coomes, Gerald Coomes and Doris White. Special thanks to Hospice of Central Ohio and Home Well Senior Care. Family will accept friends 4-8pm (prayer service at 7:30) on Thursday, November 15th, at Schoedinger North Chapel, 5554 Karl Rd., Columbus, OH 43229. Mass of Christian Burial 10am Friday, November 16th, at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 1652 Oakland Park Ave., Columbus, OH 43224 with interment at Northlawn Memory Gardens; Fr. Clarence Williams and Fr. Antonio Baus will concelebrate the Mass. Those who wish may contribute to St. James the Less or to The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute in Jim's memory.
