Jimmy has been around most every holiday at Grandma’s my entire life and been with us through the ages! We will always remember all of his crazy stories, sitting at the head of the table with a beer! As a kid, he would always put coins under the couch cushions and tell my brother and I to search for them like we were treasure hunting. He will be missed!

Jim was a distinct highlight of nearly every visit to Ohio, as far back as I can remember. As a kid, his collections were a source of pure wonder. Later, when I brought Brendan to visit, we all got along famously--I only wish we could have visited more often! He was a great storyteller, both in person and in his work as a military journalist. I feel grateful to have heard a few of his tales (though not nearly enough of them!). He will be dearly & sorely missed.

I’m so sorry about Jimmy’s passing. I know he will be missed. He was very special to our family for so many years and we all loved him. RIP Jimmy and I hope you are reunited with your loved ones again in heaven. :heart:

From Deborah Fugate, daughter of "Sam.' Jimmy became part of our family thirty years ago when he met our mother "Sam" and they shared almost three decades as sweethearts, friends, companions, and confidantes. Jimmy was there when Mark and Michelle, Sam's grandchildren, were born -- he was truly a grandfather figure to them. Jimmy was part of every holiday celebration or family get-together until his health began to decline; he was family to us and we loved him. He and Sam loved going to the local pubs and the VFW to meet with friends and listen to music. Jim was most at home in these 'dives' (as he jokingly called them) because they brought back his military days when he would entertain others with his stories. His extensive travel experiences in the military gave him a worldly perspective and provided him with endless stories (which we heard more than once). He and Sam spent time working up at the farm in Mt. Victory, travelled twice to California, and spent time at the Florida house together. I was happy they had each other. I admired Jimmy for many reasons: his passion for history, his devotion to his wife Sonja during the many years she was ill, the pride he had in his son, his generosity toward our family, his storytelling skills and ability to hold an interesting conversation, and his sense of humor, especially. One time, he tripped (on purpose) as he left the table just to make Sam laugh, and another time, he let me take a Thanksgiving photo of him holding a bottle of wine as he pretended to be asleep at the table. He was a true character and never afraid to be silly (we often commented, "They threw away the mold after making him!"). We had so many private jokes! I will always remember his joyful laughter, exuberance, and generosity. He left an indelible mark on our family. I am happy for his life and yet sad in my heart to lose the Jimmy Jim we knew and loved over the years. Safe journey, Jimmy. Until we meet again! Love you.
