Jaymes Saunders

Jaymes Rhetta O’Neal “Jamie” Saunders, age 87 passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at home. Jaymes was born on September 26, 1925 in Thomasville, Georgia to the late Joshua and Augusta Althea (nee Hamilton) O’Neal. She graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Social Work. She also worked as an Adjunct Professor at OSU and was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. For over 30 + years Jayme’s was the Executive Director of the J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center. She was a social activist and dedicated to the Hilltop community, where she won the Greater Hilltop Community Development Commission’s Women of Character Award. She will be remembered for her kindness and contagious smile. She truly loved her family and spending time with them. Jaymes is preceded in death by her husband, Attorney Charles Saunders, Sr.; and four siblings. Survived by her children, Charles (Hermione) Saunders Jr., Janice (Bill Ruben) Ossa, Leslie (Karen) Saunders and O’Neal (Jacqueline) Saunders; 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, June 30th from 2-4pm at J. Ashburn Youth Center 85 Clarendon Ave. Columbus, OH 43223. Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to J.
