

Dr. John F. "Jack" Lewis, DDS, 89, of Columbus, late Tuesday, 28th day of August, in2018, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, OH following a very brief illness, went to be with his wife Dianne and the Lord. Beloved son of James C. Lewis, Sr. and Edith Heer Lewis, born March 16, 1929 in Columbus, OH. Married March 18, 1961 to Dianne Merriman Lewis. Survived by children John (Judy Huang) and Tom (Anne Rath) of Columbus, and Raymond (Peggy Strobhar), Bradenton, FL; grandchildren Zach Bartlome, Evie, Henry, Gigi and Faith Lewis; sister-in-law Jeanne Merriman Sours; cousins Fred and Barbara Mann; Fred and Judy Heer; many nieces, nephews and cousins; longtime friends Joanne Baldwin Hickle, and Cathy Hauser. Preceded in death by wife Dianne Merriman Lewis (1996), granddaughter Ava Dianne Lewis (1999), parents James C. (1974) and Edith Heer Lewis (1991); brother James C. Lewis, Jr. (1980) and sister-in-law Barbara Baldwin Lewis (1985), father-in-law and mother-in-law Thomas (1964) and Mary Merriman (1994), sister-in-law and brother in-law Marianne Merriman (2002) and Dr. Charles Hamilton (2012); brother-in-law Tom Sours (2010); beloved aunt Ruth Heer Mann (1996); uncle Raymond J. (1980) and Fanchion R. Lewis (2008), longtime friends Dr. Gordon Hauser (2014), Donald Cox (2014), Walter Kropp (2007), Neva and Jim Henley (2013/2011), John Clark (2013), Mike and Suzie Fitzgerald (2013/2015). He was a 1947 graduate of Bexley High School, Bexley, OH, and still holds the Bexley high hurdles record set in 1946. He was the State of Ohio High School Champion in 1946 in high hurdles. In his time in the 1940's, Jack was considered one of the finest all-around athletes in the Central Ohio area, if not the entire state of Ohio. Graduate of The Ohio State University: BA, 1951; DDS, College of Dentistry, 1955. Jack served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-1957, stationed on Guam for 18 months and in Riverside, CA. He practiced dentistry in Bexley, OH from 1958-1996 and was a member of the Columbus Dental Society and the American Dental Society. He was a believing Christian and member of Christ Lutheran Church in Bexley from 1940-2018, serving as President 1975-1976. He had many fond memories of his maternal grandmother Pauline Kathryn Beck Heer, who lived with his family from 1937 until her death in 1959. Member of the Bexley Board of Education, 1958-1970, an original member of the Bexley Recreation Department, and chosen as member of the Bexley High School Sports Hall of Fame in its inaugural group. Life Member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association. Member of the Columbus Country Club for 52 years. Jack was a wonderful storyteller, a world traveler who visited six of the seven continents, an avid fisherman, loved golf, a talented gardener, an excellent cook, very informed on matters of news, politics and sports and always willing to share his "opinion." He was a selfless do-er of many good deeds for others. Spending many, many weekends with his family at the now Franchion Lewis Park in Granville, OH, he brought countless memories and even more life lessons to his family and friends. Known as Jack for most of his life, he wanted to thank all his friends present and past at Wesley Glen in Worthington who knew him by his given name John, a super experience. Funeral Service will be held 10:00 am Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church, 2314 E. Main St., Bexley with Rev. Tim Iseringhausen officiating.
