

John Sherwood Stains, age 72, passed suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday February 16, 2019, at home of cardiac arrest. He was born October 25, 1946, to John and Bessie (Sherwood) Stains in Johnstown, PA. He was married to Rebecca A. (Byerly) Stains for 47 years and she survives. He is also survived by daughter; Betsy A. Medford (Christopher) and grandsons David, Andrew, Ethan and Samuel of Orient, Ohio and son John Paul Stains (Zeliha) and granddaughters Ayla, Elissa and Renee of Jerome Township, Ohio. He is survived by brothers; Rev. David Stains (Elizabeth) and Rev. Joseph Stains (Lucy), of Johnstown, PA; Brothers in law John R. Byerly (Suzanne) of Perrysburg, OH, and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by close family friend, Son #2 Clarence (Allison) Cherry.
John graduated with a BSCE from Ohio Northern University and an MBA from Capital University. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Ohio and Michigan, and worked for over 40 years in the field of Civil Engineering, designing bridges and highways. He was past President of the Lima Area Jaycees and JCI Senator #33538. He was an active and devoted Mason, serving twice as Past Master of Linden Lodge #637 Free and Accepted Masons, member of Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus; member of Community Chapter RAM #224, Westgate Council and Columbus Commandery #69. He was a longtime member of the Engineers Club of Columbus and the central Ohio Chapter of The American Society of Highway Engineers. He was a former member of Kiwanis International and longtime volunteer for Zoofari. He was an avid lifelong hockey fan from the Johnstown Chiefs to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The family will be receiving friends at Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 N. High St., Worthington, Ohio on Tuesday February 19 from 4pm-8pm with a Masonic Funeral Service at 7:30pm. There will be a funeral service held at 2pm on Wednesday, February 20 at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 7121 Muirfield Drive in Dublin, Ohio. Rev. Dr. Stephen B. Smith and Rev. L. Cameron O'Riley officiating. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 7121 Muirfield Drive, Dublin, Ohio 43017 or to Linden Masonic Lodge #637, PO Box 1768, Westerville, Ohio 43086.
