

A funeral service for Joseph Schweitzer of Newark will be held Saturday November 19, 2011 at 9:30 AM at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home. Interment with military honors provided by the Licking County Veteran’s Alliance will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Joseph was born in Canton, Ohio on August 22, 1924 to the late Albert and Margaret Schweitzer. He died Tuesday November 15, 2011 at Arlington Nursing Home. He was 87.
Joseph served his country during WWII serving in the USMC in the South Pacific, and saw action at Guadalcanal and Bougainville. He served as a Drill Instructor, and later served in the USNR. When he returned from the war, he built many homes in the Newark area, including the new Licking Memorial Hospital on West Main St. He was a Boy Scout Leader, Boys of America Leader, and a member of the VFW, Amvets, American Legion, DAV, Marine Corps League, The Licking County Veteran’s Alliance, and a Life Member of the Knights of Pythias. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, sharing with them his interests of airplanes, and trains; and he enjoyed his trips to Canada for fishing and camping and birding. After seeing the horrors of war, he saw the beauty of life left to live.
He is preceded in death by his sons Roger Schweitzer and Nelson Anderson, and his brother David. He is survived by his wife of 22 years Margaret, children David Anderson, JoAnn Dumolt, Don (Beth) Anderson, Phyllis Boylan, Robert Schweitzer, Dottie (Gary) Wilson, Melody (Chee) Lam, Barb (Mike) Mason, Terry (Dale) Spencer, Tony (Renee) Blizzard, and Wendy (Roy) Galiher; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Schweitzer; twenty-six grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews, and his brother Don (Peg) Schweitzer of Canton.
