Dear Ron & Amy,
We are your back door neighbors, Ann King and Don Ritchey. Although we don't know you well. we are deeply touched by your loss of Joshua. I lost my eldest son Chris at the age of 33 almost twenty years ago from the ravages of cocaine. 

Substance abuse is hard to conquer and you are not alone in the frustation you must feel. You are very brave to be so open about his addiction.It took me much longer to share that information with any one outside of the immediate relatives and close friends.
It's definitely the best thing to do.

Your family must be in shock to be hit with yet another devasting loss. The pain you feel will grow less but there will you'll always be an empty space in your heart. When the time is right a group called Compassionate Friends,which is made up of parents who have lost children do support group meetings that many find beneficial.Their web site is below;

I want to thank you for having the courage to share your story and to remind us of the battles I am sure Josh fought everyday.  This is close to home here, and it is a reminder that this terrible issue and addiction can grab anyone, anywhere.  This will prompt and remind me to discuss this issue with my sons.  If any one of your friends or neighbors can use this tradgey  to somehow protect one of our loved ones from the same terrible issues, then Josh's life and memory will still carry on in proection of someone else.

Ron & Amy,  I will always remember fondly the times that we shared fishing and golfing together. He was a joy to be around at all times and it was great seeing him grow from a young boy into a man. I am so very sorry for your loss, for the heartache of this situation and for the struggles that Joshua faced. Loss is always difficult but when combined with Joshua's young age and the circumstances that you have bravely and candidly shared makes it even more tragic. What a gift you and Ron gave Joshua when you welcomed him into your home last December and what an example of unconditional love you demonstrate every day to your other 3. You and Ron and your family are in my prayers.

I am Susan Bringardner and live right behind you.

Of course, there are not words to help you right now.  You need to merely exist in that fog that will carry you through for awhile and hopefully, ease you back into a kinder life.

We know of other similar situations like your son's.  Having our own sons, 25 and 23 years old, we have heard many stories that mirror Joshua's struggle for sobriety.  I'm not sure there is ever a time with kids ever addicted to anything can truly say they have beat it.  The longing is always there. 

What I have learned throughout out the years is addiction makes everyone helpless; the victim, the family and friends.  You must never hold blame or shame as you and your son undoubtedly did everything possible to try to keep the wolf at bay.  Sometimes, addiction just wins.  The carnage left behind is immeasurable.  The pain is too deep.

You have done such a wonderful job with all your boys.  You have provided the newest three of them with comfort and safety when they needed it most.  You stepped in to become their parents and allowed your lives to be changed forever.  Remember the goodness you have provided to your family.  You provided the same goodness to Joshua but addiction wedged in.

Joshua knows how much you love him and always will.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
