Joyce Marie Brickey passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026 at Village Shalom in Overland Park, Kansas. Joyce was born on November 10, 1936 in South Portsmouth, Kentucky, to the late Roy and Mary “Mae” Qualls. Joyce graduated Salutatorian of her 1954 Class from McKell High School and was a member of The National Beta Club. She then earned a Diploma in Secretarial Science from Portsmouth Interstate Business College in 1955. Joyce met Willard “Lake” Brickey while studying at business college. She and Lake married on June 10, 1955. She worked for The Chamber of Commerce and The Stove Company prior to marriage.
Joyce and Lake relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where they resided and raised their family. She was passionate about being a mother of five children and devoted her life to her family. It was always her desire to be a homemaker, and she was an excellent cook, baker, and seamstress. She was also a PTA member, “Room Mother” for each of her kids, and volunteered for The American Cancer Society. At the age of 60, Joyce re-entered the work force at North Broadway Children’s Center on a part-time basis as a teacher’s aide until she retired at the age of 80.
Joyce was a baptized Christian and was a member of Indianola Church of Christ for over 50 years. She happily served her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the capacities of Deaconess, Secretary of her Double W Sunday School class, teacher and chaperone of the Juniors Sunday School class, was involved in the Missions Ministry, and a greeter. She especially enjoyed her Thursday Ladies Bible study group.
Joyce was known for her warm hugs. Everyone that received one of her hugs would feel her kindness and gentle spirit. She was a shining light and will be dearly missed by her loving family and wonderful friends.
Joyce is survived by her son, Willard Brickey; daughter Susie Limpic (Paul); son-in-law, Glen Borchers; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson; sister, Janice (Bob Denny); brothers, Gary Qualls and John Qualls (Jan). Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Lake Brickey, Sr.; children, Bruce Brickey, David Brickey, and Betsy Borchers; and sister-in-law Brenda Qualls.
A memorial service will be held for Joyce at Schoedinger Northwest Funeral Home on Zollinger Road in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Visitation 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Service 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM. Joyce will be laid to rest at Union Cemetery in Section 20.
