University of Rio Grande Women's Basketball Team

Thru the years I have thought often of my friend, Julie Chambers. Initially she and I worked together as scrub nurses in the Operating Room of University Hospital beginning about October of 1953. ( Sorry, it will always be University Hospital for me, not the Wexner Medical Center.) When it was decided that the OR should have head nurses, Julie and I were among those initially chosen for that honor and responsibility. Julie was Head Nurse of GYN for surgery Suites 5 and 6 and I was Head Nurse for Orthopedic and Neurosurgery in Suites 9 and 10. But we were not just coworkers, we were also good friends. There was much camaraderie as we sat in the women's dressing room chatting over the lunches we packed in brown paper bags or worked together in the instrument room after all our cases for the day were finished, cleaning and oiling our instruments and preparing for our next day's operations. Today's medical professionals can hardly believe that in those days we had to clean the syringes and sharpen any bent hypo needles. We also washed out rubber tubing and hand washed bloody rubber gloves, checking that there were no holes and then sent all the supplies that we had manually cleaned to Cental Supply where they were again examined, repackaged in cloth wrappers and autoclaved in sterile packs for future use.

I worked in the O R with Julie until the end of August 1956, just two days before my first child, also a Carla, was born. Six months later we moved to Germany as my husband
began his career as an Air Force officer. Many moves later we returned to Columbus where we have lived ever since. I last saw Julie when I took my Carla on a tour of University Hospital in 1974 as she was trying to decide between studying nursing at 
OSU or Capital University. We went up to the 4th floor and the only person who was 
still there from the old days was Julie. We flew into one another's arms like the long separated friends that we were. She was always a very special person......generous, 
kind, loyal, intelligent, industrious, professional and funny. I can still remember the 
crazy rhyme she taught me for remembering the symptoms of an epileptic seizure. 

I mourn with you, her family, that Julie has moved on. She was indeed a very special lady who made a difference in this world. But do not grieve that she is gone. Smile and rejoice
that she lived and was a precious part of your lives.
