

Laura Sendreak Kortyna, age 84, of Westerville, went home to be with her Lord and son, Blase, February 28, 2010. She was born October 2, 1925 in Slovan, PA to the late Blase and Victoria Sendreak. She was a 1943 graduate of Union High School. Laura moved to the Cleveland area in 1952, where she was an incredible saleswoman for both CopperCraft and World Book Encyclopedia. She later moved to New Mexico, where she lived for 15 years. There she volunteered as an Ombudsman in nursing homes and a senior companion. In 2000, Laura moved to Columbus to be closer to family, where she was active in the Westerville Senior Citizen Center. She was a devout Catholic and very active in the church. Preceded in death by her parents; son, Blase; daughter-in-law, Lillie Kortyna; brother, John Sendreak; and sisters, Machaline Helminski and Blanche Miara. Laura will be missed by her loving children, Alice (Allen) Kemper, George (Gina) Kortyna III, MD, Gerard Kortyna, and Ann (Edward) Hirsel; former husband, George Kortyna Jr.; grandchildren, Jill (Israel) Smith, Eric Kemper, Ian and Vanessa, Gerard Kortyna Jr., and Laura, Suzanne, and Victoria Hirsel; sisters, Josephine Cieslak and Jennie Babicz; and special friend, Betty Yakubisin. Laura had an astonishing memory that amazed everyone. She loved to play cards, games, and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, and a good joke. Family will receive friends Wednesday, March 3, 2010 from 2-4pm and 6-8p at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High St. (Just South of I-270). Mass of Christian Burial will be 10am Thursday, March 4, 2010 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 5750 N. High St., Worthington, Fr. Stash Dailey, Celebrant. Burial at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland. In lieu of flowers, please: Feed someone that is hungry. Help someone in need. Live a good life. Be a kind person. Volunteer.
